  1. That's a sweeping statement. So every Lexus model has incorrect standard settings?
  2. may be worth getting a compression test done on the engine in case a head gasket has blown.
  3. It's not on the schedule because it is designed to be for life, and on the GS and LS it is, however on the RX it seems to get very dirty.
  4. front pads are very easy to change if you have the correct tools and any sort of mechanical experience. If you take your time it shouldn't take longer than 30 mins. per side. However whilst you have the wheel in the air it would be a good idea to check for wheel bearing/ball joint/steering rack for play. Make sure the brake caliper is free to move in and out and check the thickness of the brake disc.
  5. Change the gearbox fluid, it isn't specified in the maintenance schedule but many failures reported in the US if the fluid isn't replaced. Check the colour of the fluid on the dipstick, it should be nice and bright red but will probably be dark red/brown.
  6. If they ever serviced MKIV Supras then they have no problem with a series I GS.
  7. Thanks :) Probably not staying with Toyota/Lexus, not excited about driving anything they do at present (that I can afford) and I fancy a change. Currently considering an SLK. Still have the wife's RX300 though.
  8. people mainly notice a difference after fitting a grounding kit because they disconnect the battery during installation which resets the ECU. Unless you have a problem with your existing grounding then any gains are going to be very very small. If the design engineers could get an extra couple of mpg out of the vehicle or better emissions just by installing a couple of wires they would have done it. Improved idling is probably the best you can hope for.
  9. I believe both models are painted with soft water based paints. If the 1st gen had been re-sprayed then the new paint may have been stronger.
  10. Hi Guys Has anybody received a trade-in price recently for a series II GS430? Looking at What Car and Parkers on line valuations and there is a big difference between them. £5k to £7.5k I've been offered £4.5 for mine, apparently booked at £5.3k but £800 off due to work required. GS 430 SE Nav 2000 X 59,000 miles Full Lexus history requires 4 new tyres, one scuffed wheel, paint required on drivers door (been keyed :tsktsk: ) and rear bumper. Intermediate service due.
  11. just spray water on the belt, the noise will go or change if the belt is the cause.
  12. Facelift models (Oct 2000 onwards) have a larger brake master cylinder, I've not heard of any of these failing. Plugs are only expensive if you get them from a dealer. For general things to look out for: http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/knowledge...p;id=16&c=3
  13. Prices have fallen, but a good 1998 model should be worth around £4k. Buyers are difficult to find so some people are cutting prices, whilst others don't want to believe prices have dropped and are being too optimistic. Check out www.whatcar.co.uk for a valuation.
  14. reset the ECU to clear the codes, they are not related to the master cylinder. Depending on your fault code reader it may not show C codes, only standard P codes. Attached shows how to get fault code from the VSC system PRECHE.PDF
  15. The LS430 launched in Oct 2000 so try and find one from the first 6 months, but it will only be a 5 speed box.
  16. my understanding is the 1998-2000 models cannot be reprogrammed without a master key. For Oct 2000+ models I believe Lexus dealers are able to re-programme using Official Lexus diagnostic equipment
  17. Lexus dealers, and other luxury dealers, always offer below trade-in book price.
  18. and if the speedo was reading 45ish then you were really only doing around 40mph so the difference between the true speed and the GPS could be caused by the altitude.
  19. It's 10% slower because your speedo is set to read 10% faster than the actual speed. All speedos in UK cars read above the true speed.
  20. I doubt the backlight has a separate fuse within the vehicle. The screen itself probably has an internal fuse on the backlight inverter board but they don't normally blow unless something has gone wrong so you may have to look for a new screen. :(
  21. 100,000 miles or 10 years is correct. Worth checking the belts condition at 60,000 then every 10,000 miles.
