  1. HI Guy's Vehicle: IS220d Multimedia Year: 2007 I hope someone can shed some light on my bizarre problem, only noticed it couple a weeks ago when my s3 car charger refused to charge my phone even though the charging indication was showing red on the s3. The charger works fine on my other vehicle. I have ruled that out. I decided to hook up my obd2 ELM bluetooth dongle with Torque Pro software to monitor what the voltage was. Here is my finding: Car switched off = 12.6V Car switched On (idle) = 14V Car switched On (Rev 1500) = 14.5V When driving, foot on acceleration my voltage drops to 12.3V as soon as i lift the foot off the accelerator the voltage shoots up to 14.1V, even if i'm in gear or while driving putting in neutral same problem when accelerating. ** For the above test Climate control, Radio/CD, windows etc,, were not in use, No load apart from engine running** I have even done a parasitic drain test using my voltmeter and that shows reading of 0.15 micro amps which i assume is normal aslong as its below 0.50 micro amps. The only thing i haven't checked is the ground straps. Can some please tell me how many ground straps there are for this vehicle and where are they located on the vehicle. I just hope its something simple like a loose or broken strap. P.S I also have at my disposal the latest TIS techstream software on my laptop..i can look at other readings in depth but not sure where to look with this problem. Look forward to your reply Thanks in advance
  2. Hi, I've had my 59plate 220d for a just over a month now and am so far very please with it. The bumper trim however is slightly out of line on the rear passenger side wheel arch, (i am guessing that the bumpers been pressed up against at some point though there is no sign of damage other than this gap) and i was wondering if anybody had any advice in re-setting this myself? There are also a few chips and scratches on the car nothing your average person would notice but i'm starting to. I would consider trying to remove these myself the car is grey (cadoxton slate) are there any particular paint repair kits that owners would recommend or should i just go down the professional route. Thanks Brycey
  3. Hi all, I own a Lexus IS220d, 57 plate. Some boy racer (late 30s fat hairy bloke trying to be a boy racer) in a souped up mazda has decided to clip my drivers side wing mirror. In the aftermath it appears the the housing for the mirror is intact and still works (automatic open/close via the switch on the drivers door), the mirror can still be adjusted too. So all that is broken is the heated mirror glass (it is cracked and splintered but still attached to the housing and usable - but will fail my upcoming MOT). After some googling around it appears that I have several options. The first and simplest is to get another mirror (without the heating element) and use the foam adhesive to stick it on top of the broken glass or on the plastic clip. I can get this for about £6 and in either the plain or blue tint versions (which look quite nice). 1. Having a second mirror attached on top of the heated mirror, will this affect the heating of the mirror in any way? - logic dictates that it will still work, albeit slower due to heat transfer taking longer. Can anyone confirm (or is the heating element broken with the glass?)? The second option is to get a heated mirror like this. Its cheap (under £10), and from the description, looks like it will fit my car. However it does not come with the black plastic clip (see attached file). 2. How hard is to attach a new mirror to the old clip? Are there any other considerations I need to take into account before attempting to replace the mirror? Anyone here with some experience, care to give me some feedback? Thank you
  4. I cleaned my car last week and a few days later realised that the lower cover next to the fog light was missing. I have scoured the web looking for a replacement part to no avail, can anyone suggest where I might find a replacement part as it looks very ugly without.
  5. Hi guys! Having looked at the competition - C-Class, 3 Series etc I'm seriously considering an IS as an alternative based on the fact it seems to represent excellent value for money. I'm currently in an Abarth 500 which is a horror to live with on a daily basis, particularly now my main mileage is motorway - around 10k a year - with a long 320 mile round trip once a fortnight. So basically I need something bigger, comfy and reasonably economical - the Abarth will do about 50mpg on the motorway - where it really matters about MPG. Done a lot of reading, read a lot of reviews and am now torn between the 220D and 250. What should I go for given the above? If I'll see 40+ on the Motorway from the 250 - it's a serious, and preferable option, I'm no fan of Diesels, but needs must with that fortnightly trip. What other things should I look out for. I want leather, that's non negotiable and have a budget of around £8500-10k. Due to the miles I'll be putting on, I want a car with no more than 40k and no older than a 2008 really and I know that's easily achievable with that budget. If I get on with it I will probably run it for another 30k before changing. But what about the other stuff like Satnav - is it worth it? There are plenty out there I know but where to start? Thank you in advance!
  6. Hi, I've just joined the club but I have been following the forums for the last few months since buying my 59 plate IS220d. The steering rack on the car failed last week whilst driving on the M42.....very scary! The car is currently with Lexus Birmingham and I have been quoted £2450 to replace it. Lexus GB have offered a maximum good-will payment of £1400 but that still leaves me with a bill for over £1000 on a 4 year old car that has only done 42,000 miles. In my opinion major components on luxury cars should not fail after such a short life. Can anybody offer advice about who to chase for a more generous good-will payment or the full cost of the repair. My wife is 8 months pregnant so I have asked the dealership to go ahead and do the work ASAP as I can't live without a car but I would like to carry on the fight to get my money back. Thanks Paul
  7. Hi all I have a Lexus IS 220d (7 plate) - Just reached 140k on the clock Just recently the car is struggling in high gear and feels like its missing to the extent that it nearly stalls unless i go into 4th pretty quickly Anyone else had these symptoms and if so what could be the cause. Ive been told that it could be the EGR Valve? but when i recently had an MOT, the emissions were very good, would it have failed if the EGR valve was playing up ?? Any help or advice as to what to check would be greatly appreciated I drive around 35k per year, and regularey have it serviced Cheers
  8. Hi, I've had a good search and can't find anyone who has changed the gearbox oil in an is220d. I want to do this to see if it improves the gear change, especially 1st to 2nd when the car is cold. I have changed the box oil on many cars and found it can make massive improvements, especially when the correct oil is used. So I have the following questions: Can it be done and is it straightforward? Which oil grade should be used? Any special tools needed?
  9. Hi everyone. I've been reading these forums and have found a lot of valuable advice with regards to the IS220d head gasket issue so far. Really shocked at the extent of it. I have an '06 IS220d with 72k miles on the clock and FSH and have been losing water out the header tank for about 3 weeks, with it gradually getting worse. I had the car diagnosed by a cooling specialist as having a blown head gasket (Lexus couldn't fit me in for 3 weeks!). The car still runs fine (I had it recovered by the AA as soon as I discovered the head gasket) and doesn't have water in the oil or oil in the radiator as far as I can see. On speaking with Lexus UK, they've stated they will not consider my case for any goodwill coverage due to the age even though the mileage is far below the maximum. I'm still pursuing Lexus to come to the party, but I'm not holding my breath. Lexus Milton Keynes has suggested that, worst case, I will need to replace the engine which will cost more than than the value of the car. They said it will cost circa £500 to determine the extent of the damage and provide a quote on the repair. I am hoping that it's just a head gasket, and not a full rebuild. Or am I smoking something to think that? I am looking for some advice on options for how to proceed with the diagnosis and repair. Is there another option other than to go with Lexus at £100/hr + VAT or is Lexus the only sensible option? Thx in advance for your advice.
  10. Well, this seems to have put a damper on DPF removal, although not sure how it will affect cars which still have the dpf in place but its insides removed and emulator fitted? http://www.oilem.com/content/143-dpf-removal-become-mot-failure.html https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/263018/diesel-particulate-filters-guidance.pdf
  11. Hello, I have a problem with my Lexus IS220d 2006 for more than 1 month, I don't have enough fuel pressure to start the engine, I suppose to have 550 bar but I have just 50-65 bar. I sent to check the injectors and the fuel pressure pump, they told me that they are OK, I took the fuel pressure pump from another car and tested on my one, still didn't work, I put my fuel pressure pump and common rail on another car, they are working. I didn't swap the injectors with another car and now I think they are the problem but I sent them to check and they told me they are OK. I don't have any electrical error, I just don't have enough fuel pressure. The motor starter it's trying to start but not enough fuel pressure to start. The only way to start the car it's the easy start (with a spray). Do you have any ideas? Thanks
  12. Hi, usual newbie apologies apply. Is there an easy way to identify if a model is post or pre mid-life facelift? I read differing views that the is220d had a change in 2008/2009. The model I am looking at buying is a used October 2008 model from Lexus themselves. Their site states it has 175ps, 400Nm, 168g/km. Will it have the same gearbox everyone seems to question? Would anyone advise getting a later model? Thanks in advance.
  13. Hi guys, I need to change my rear shocks absorber from my Lexus IS 220D (ALE20L-AEFLYW) - more info about orignal part. I was at Lexus Service and one shock absorber cost 320euro x 2 pieces left/right = 640euro without installation, expensive... I checked in service the number of my shock is Tokico Japan 48530-53141 or 4853080416 - ALE20..RHD..ATM MARK 48530-53141,MALAYSIA SPEC,MALAYSIA SPEC&TIRE & DISC WHEEL-225/45R17+245/45R17,SUMMER TIRE,ALUMI And I find alternative in Japan: Tokico 4853080413 - GSE20 MARK 48530-53121,TIRE & DISC WHEEL-225/45R17+245/45R17,SUMMER TIRE,ALUMI - cost 66euro/piece = 132euro + 70euro shipping, huge difference! Who knows, what difference between ALE20 & GSE20? I think I can use GSE20(IS250) shock absorber on my ALE20(IS220D)... Please help! thanks in advance!
  14. Hi all Today after almost a year I decided to clean the EGR valve as it had been 10K since I last did it and the car was feeling a bit sluggish. When I removed the engine cover, to my surprise it was covered in sort of black tar (but hard to the touch) around one of the injectors and burn marks and similar crust on the underside of the enigne cover as well. When I started the car, with the bonnet up and engine cover off, it was like a steam engine. It was blowing sort of steam, stream from the injector on every turn of engine about every four ticks I presume. So.. I dont know how long its been blown for as I had been feeling the car was becoming a bit sluggish and MPG was going down quite a bit and I thought it was the EGR valve. Problem is that when the engine cover was on and I was usually sat in the car with the windows up and AC on, I would not have heard that steam engine blowing So I am a bit scared now what to do about it. Its on 118000 miles now. The head gasket should be OK as the pink radiator fluid is still pink and no residue inside the engine oil cover. I am trying to post some pics with this thread but don't know if they will come out properly. Any comments? suggestions what to do next?
  15. Hi everyone in the forum, I have a Lexus IS220D with 46000miles and i'm gonna change the front and rear brake pads. I was looking in ebay and i found this ones REAR PADS : http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3f181abde9 http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a76372e51 http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a75c53329 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEXUS-MK2-250-153KW-05-PAD1482-REAR-APEC-BRAKE-PADS-/251076287055?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ALexus%7CModel%3AIS%7CCars+Type%3A220+d&hash=item3a75501a4f FRONT PADS : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEXUS-MK2-220-D-130KW-06-MINTEX-FRONT-BRAKE-PADS-MDB2747-/270984949436?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ALexus%7CModel%3AIS%7CCars+Type%3A220+d&hash=item3f17f62ebc http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEXUS-MK2-220-D-130KW-06-ADB01632-FRONT-BRAKE-PADS-/300723028885?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ALexus%7CModel%3AIS%7CCars+Type%3A220+d&hash=item46047d4395 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEXUS-MK2-220-D-130KW-06-ADT342163-ADL-FRONT-BRAKE-PADS-/271002734276?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ALexus%7CModel%3AIS%7CCars+Type%3A220+d&hash=item3f19058ec4 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEXUS-MK2-220-D-130KW-06-PAD1586-FRONT-APEC-BRAKE-PADS-/300718735210?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3ALexus%7CModel%3AIS%7CCars+Type%3A220+d&hash=item46043bbf6a What is your recomendation ? 16. Hello Owners, I am seriously considering getting a second hand IS 220D for the next family car. I have stomached an Alfa 147 jtd for the last 5 years and have had enough of bolting back on all the bits that drop off it with frightening regularity. I do 18+K a year, mostly motorways. I am more than willing to swap the Alfa's fun (when it works) driving experiance for a more sedate atmosphere, and from what I have read, the Lexus seems to fit the bill for size, style, extras and reliability. I am well aware of the egr valve issue with the 220D (I eventually blanked the Alfa's off), and am very happy to maintain service items myself (Alfa ownership forces you to get aquainted with your tools). BUT my big issue is the HEAD GASKET. Only in these forums have I read of the appreciable risk of it bursting in the Lexus, whereas all other reviews spout on about Lexus' fabulous reliability. Is this a real issue or just a few isolated cases? Is it a result of driving style or poor maintenance? Hope I can get some definative advice from those with 1st hand experience. Cheers Tim
  17. I had recently some problems with famous EGR valve... ;( While reading the forum I found a couple of threads ref the EGR and I decided to check what is under my bonnet (very similar symptoms)... and what I expected 'the layer of carbon dust' looked like coal mine !!!EGR completely black and block by that filth. I don't suspect previous owner looked up to clean the valve before... Can any of the forum members give me some advice how to prevent that..if that is possible... Many thanks
  18. Hi! I appologise if this has already been asked. I searched before posting but couldn't findd it. I am looking to buy my first lxus is 220d but having done some research i am quite confused to be honest. i like two cars, one of them is 220d sport and the other one is se multimedia. i think multimedia means it has builtin sat nav etc right? but what are the other major differences please? Cheers
  19. I am doing a couple of modifications to the rear of my car. Thought I would just let you all know that the words "Lexus" and "IS 220 d" have 6 locator pins. Therefore if you remove them, you will have to fill the holes and paint the boot lid.
  20. OK, so I go the car last Saturday. I part exchanged my Golf IV. Good buy I must say, So here my experience for the week. The car is spotless inside out. One pre owner and it looks like he/she looked after it really well. Not a single scratch or scuff on it. Inside it is spotless as well and not even a single scratch I can see on the console or the steering wheel or door handles. Pretty amazing considering it is 5 years old. Unless the dealer fixed it :-). Whilst at the dealer (actually internet dealer) I asked for test drive for half an hour. I took it for a spin on the A419 and then town. I tested every single button, even the boot light :-) Impressed how smooth it was and obviously I bought it. Mileage wise, testing in towns and busy hours it returned 32.7.consistently. I work in Bristol and did the following; swindon-bristol-swindon, (M4, M32) 5th gear 70-80 it returned 40 mpg. swindon-bristol-swindon, (M4, M32) 6th gear 80+ (rpm @ 2k) it returned 42.3. NO 6th gear is not slow or useless, I easily over took without changing just don't let rpm drop below 1700 or so and if it drops change to 5th and go. these trips from swindon center to bristol center. I haven't tried cruise control yet but tomorrow I will as i have 180 miles journey and my aim is to reach that magic 44mpg. the ride is fantastic and very comfortable and just like the Golf (and I hate to say that) rock solid at high speed. It is also amazing at roundabouts. I takes it at 40 with ease glued to the road. Never felt so relaxed while driving. This car is not slow as others try to make it. This is how I drive it, 1st gear just to pull it and immediately change to 2nd and let rpm reach 1500 and fee the power from there on. This is my experience, and I thought I drop by with some good news :-) I will attach some photos when I have time. Have a nice holiday all.
  21. Hi all this is my first post ,I have a 2006 IS220d SE. My problem is i notest that the engin noise was a little louder than normal, so gave it a little rev and could hear the turbo a little rattley(engin at correct temp). I drove home about 7 or 8 miles with a trailor in tow and timber, (turbo has given a little more lag at times than norm) when i got home i poped the bonnet the coolant was sprayed about the engin and when reved the coolan was being pushed up out of the overflow pipe (which is only short about 100mm) the turbo is definately rattley and when it kicks in definately pushes the water up and out of the header tank. Their is no oil water mixing with the oil (no scum in cap) no smoke no real power loss. i have not come across a problem like this befor, so , so far i presume that the turbo is leaking gases into the coolant system????? any help with this would be greatly appriciated, if i can do the job my self even better Update i notised that one of the two pipes coming from the back of the turbo was split (left one) i have cut it down and refitted, Turbo sounds much better but still same prob as above. Update: Headgasket was the problem. I sent the car off to Belfast for Lexus to look at and just as your chap in Pool Dorcet, i had a phone call a day and a half later from Karen Lexus. They had looked at the car and found that it was the fault that they recodnised and that the car was ready to be picked up as soon i liked, Lexus picked up the bill (my jaw was on the floor) all i had to pay was £64 for the consumables. I was up there like a shot ;-) and handed over the cash lol. Befor setting off My son and i thought to have a look at the nice shiny new engin :-) when we looked my son noticed that the cam belt was over the lip of the pully and badly freyed. We went to inform the sales chap and he apolagised and said tha it would be fixed and they would deliver the car down to me, and they did. I had 104,000 miles on that engin (the max is 110/111,000) or 7years old. You must have full service history for the engin. It must be the problem that they recodnise for the courtiousy of them paying for it. I have nothing but Praise for Lexus, and it is a great car . Thanks Chuckie888 short and sweet answer just what i needed thanks again.
  22. Hi all, I've recently bought an 2009 IS220d & as much as I like it & the fact I got it at a fair price, it is a bit basic. For example - Velour seats - 16' Alloys - Single exhaust - The stock sound system Basically I've set aside about £1000.00 to upgrade it either visually or performance wise (or both even) & have thought about maybe an engine remap etc. My question is can anyone recommend a few upgrades for my budget? Thanks!
  23. I have made the EGR bypass. At 106.000km the EGR was almost completly full of carbon. After Cleaning with Brake Cleaner liquid and a screw driver: Closing the EGR pipe fitting. Tubes installed: Final Result: Nice, clean and... more economic fuel consumption :)
  24. Hi, My Lexus was running fine last night but when I started it this afternoon, the engine starts and then cuts out after a couple of seconds. A friend of mine hooked it up to his OBD reader and it came up with B2799 engine immobiliser system malfunction. I obviously cant drive the car and the nearest dealership to me is an hour away. I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or could suggest something? Lexus 220D 2006
  25. Can anyone help, my mirror switch has stopped working on the l/h/s it started to fail then would work again, after a few months now its stopped all together, the mirror on the right side still works, I phoned Lexus but they want £70 plus vat for the switch, anyone know where to get one from?
