Double Locking

Recommended Posts

Does anybody use this function? Apparently, you need to press the lock button a second time within 2.5 seconds of locking the car. Or do UK cars not have this? I can hear the central locking motor doing something when I press the button a second time. If a window was broken to gain access the door still cannot be unlocked from the inside so there is a security benefit I guess.

Not sure on that one chap.

You can hold down the lock button after exiting to close any open windows? Same applies with the unlock button if you want to let the heat out before getting in the car. :)

Just hold down the button and the windows will open/close. Might be the noise you hear when you hold down the lock button??

Lexus can activate/de-activate a number of functions on these cars. Just depends what the previous owner wanted/used.

I think the motion sensor is disabled by the 'satellite switch' by the steering wheel. See section 1.6 It's on page 81 of my early manual. It says don't use this function when leaving people in the car for obvious reasons. I would prefer it if it deadlocked/double locked as default and the second press disabled it for when leaving people in the car.

It's a deadlocking function, has been the same on Toyota / Lexus cars for many many years.

First press locks the doors and alarms, second press activates deadlocks - with deadlocks the doors cannot be opened from the inside so even if someone breaks a window they cannot open the door to get in.

The satellite switch to the right hand side of the wheel is where you can find the option to turn off internal sensor should you want to leave animal or child in car but lock the door, it re-enables itself the next time.

Thanks - confirms my understanding of the feature :)

Thanks for that...must remember to use it in less salubrious areas from now on.

I'm surprised that deadlocking is not the default (one press) option. I mean, why would you ever want to lock your car without deadlocking it?

dangerous it you lock your car whilst driving. Or if you lock somebody in there - e.g. kids whilst paying for petrol etc.

Hadn't thought about the case where you are driving the car, although you would think that Toyota could set it not to deadlock if the Ignition is ON (just like having all the doors unlock when the airbags are triggered).

I don't have children, but surely if they are young enough that you would lock them in the car while paying for petrol, then you would also have the child locks set on the rear doors, which effectively achieves much the same thing (i.e. you cannot open them from the inside)?

I guess that for my usage case (which may not be typical), whenever I lock the car it means that there is nobody in it, so I'd always like it to deadlock. If there's an adult in the car (e.g. my wife, while I'm paying for petrol), then I would not lock it. If I did have young children in the car, and I had to leave them there for a short time, then I guess that I'd switch off the intrusion sensor and do a "lock but don't deadlock".

unfortunately you also have to worry about them being snatched. 😞

The early IS200s always deadlocked, you couldn't disable it. They changed the behaviour after a couple of years and all the other Toyota/Lexus models I know, that actually have deadlocks, only to so on second press.
