You should be able to use your key mate.

Thank you.

I was planning to charge the Battery on main and then inspect all the cables from the alternator to the Battery and all the fuses today before I take the car to garage and pay the bills. AA guy didn't really check the alternator he just said is definitely that.

By chance could it be a faulty fuse or corroded cables? Is there a fuse as such and can I see a broken wire like normal fuses?

You should be able to check the wireing. As for fuse not that i know of, normally when alternators go mate its bushes or the wireing thats fried.

Thanks Mada. Might just give everything a miss and just hand the car over to garage.

Maybe that's why I was getting burning smell.

When I put this thread up with burning smell was about a month ago. So sounds like alternator was playing up, then all was good (2-3 weeks) and now dead. That's why wanted to check for loose connections.

have a big family trip in December so money's a bit tight at the moment..:(

All sorted after a £330 bill.

Alternator required 2 hours of labor and now I have a new unit with 12 months warranty. Anyone looking for a for a decent garage with nice service then Kwik Start in Barking Essex is a good place to visit.

They do all electrical work and rotating machinery in a very clean environment at reasonable prices.

Thanks all.

Nice one herd they were a pain to fit. Main thing all done, did they change the belt while they were at it.

I think its the space thats so tight and also there is a bolt which you have to work blind as is on the manifold.

Crap I completely forgot to mention to replace they belt as I don't believe they did - Was to excited to getting the car in and out. Should be alright thou as if it was in bad condition they would have told me.

They gave me print out report for Battery Test, Alternator Test which was charging at 13.9v.

They supplied the unit and fitted it. They specialise in alternators and starter motors. It's a refurbished Denso unit with 12 months parts and labour
