IS250 2006 - Programming smart key - "Place on passenger seat"

Recommended Posts

Hey all again,

I've been trying to program an additional key for my IS250 and I managed to get it connected, get the setup wizard started, tap my key on the ignition, tap the blank key on the ignition then my laptop says something along the lines of "now place the blank key on the passenger side seat" and nothing that I physically do with the key let's me progress, always ending in failure of the setup.

I have tried arranging a visit to the local Toyota/Lexus technicians as I don't mind the small programming fee but they have been messing me about for the last three weeks leaving me with "best do it yourself then!" attitude...

Thanks!

I wonder if the instructions are for a LHD car so the key needs to be placed on the driver’s seat to be in range during final set up?

Have you also considered taking both keys to an auto locksmith as they can normally clone from the master key?

I tried both front seats, both footwells and holding the new key near ignition - all of that ends with the same result of the timer running out causing a failure.

Autolocksmith is my next stop if this doesn't work, I was hoping it's the usual "DOH! Stupid me!" scenario and since I went through the trouble of getting the cable working and connected, I hoped someone here could make me feel silly once more (in a good way) before I take the car to a specialist.

This video may help. It's not specifically for a 2006 IS but he may have done one if this doesn't work for you. If you look at the comments, mine (John Hewitt) is second one down in the list and the video he pointed me to worked brilliantly. There are also plenty of other vids on the Tube as well if this particular guy doesn't have one to help you.

EDIT: If your new additional key came from eBay or somewhere like that, are you absolutely sure it's for the UK market? I believe the transponder frequencies are different in, say, the USA.

Is your key used by any chance? Used keys cannot be programmed via totoya tech stream, I had this same issue when I was doing my mums IS250C. You can revirginise the used key but youll have to pay a locksmith additional money to do that before tech stream will allow it to be programmed.

What version did you select for your vehicle also? There are certain slight configurations I found (up to 3 different ones) when selecting my vehicle in tech stream so that could play a part perhaps.
