Surely you can tell by the temperature of the air coming out of the vents without needing to look at the lights?

If you really can't tell then it could be a sign that the refrigerant has leaked out of the system and it needs to be regassed.

You would also... hear a slight change in revs etc., when switched on.

Is there a small glass inspection 'window' under the bonnet you can view?

If the "A/C" button is lit (green illumination), it's on.

On cars without a navigation screen, it's a physical button on the dashboard. When the nav unit is equipped, it's toggled on/off via a digital button on the Climate screen.

PS. For best results IMO, just leave it turned on all the time in auto mode and use the windscreen demister as and when needed.
