Rear Quarter Windows

I have often thought how nice it would be to be able to raise the quarter windows with the roof down and lower them with the roof up sometimes. I know there was a kit available years ago to do this but it hasn’t been available for a long time.  I wrote something further on this but realise I need to edit it so will add to this post when I get the info correct

IRevised post with more info -

I have often thought how nice it would be to be able to raise the quarter windows with the roof down and lower them with the roof up sometimes. I know there was a Luxlink kit available years ago to do this but it hasn’t been available for a long time.  I have seen this process below to get them up with the roof down but I haven’t tried it as under normal operation the windows are down when the roof closes and Lexus probably did that for a reason. Has anyone tried this and not had any issues or is there a way of lowering the quarter windows having raised them when the is roof down before closing it.

Closing the Quarter Windows

1. Turn the ignition switch on

2.Turn the trunk lid opener main switch (in the glovebox) from the operative position to the inoperative position (in the cancelled position)

3. Push the OPEN/CLOSE switch on the OPEN side twice slowly, within 10 seconds after step 2

4. Hold down the same switch on the CLOSE side once within 10 seconds after step 3

5. The quarter windows will close

I have also seen what maybe another method here.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sc430-2nd-gen-2001-2010/345024-little-known-tips-tricks-for-the-sc430.html

I have also seen photos of SC430’s with the quarter windows down with the roof up and thought this must be a mod however it only dawned on me recently that they may have just started and stopped the roof opening/closing process on the switch either when the windows first go down before the roof starts to go down or are still down when the roof closes as you have to keep holding the switch to completely open or close the roof. I maybe wrong but from memory when closing the roof it chimes when the roof is fully closed and the windows are still down so you could stop there. I assume you could then drive the car and complete the process of raising the windows later by pressing the button before leaving the car. Unfortunately it is now so cold and horrible plus my car is all tucked in under a cover I am not inclined to experiment at the moment.

I am not suggesting anyone else try these methods as I would hate for someone to mess their roof mechanism up

I hope this all makes sense.

Any thoughts on this or other options you have tried that work?

Hi Glynn

I have often thought an SC430 would look great with front and rear windows dropped without the roof being down. Like an American muscle car.

I remember seeing an American electrical specialist post a YouTube clip that made this possible by an electrical modification

That mod of being able to control the rear windows independent of the roof mechanism would probably be the answer to both.

I wonder if Calvin (SC430 MODS) has ever investigated this and found a method of achieving it.

Keep us informed.

This has all been done before with Luxlink and other modules. The info should be on the US site.

Steve (Wil44) has done the switched rear quarter window mod to his car and produced an excellent 'how to' write up for it but alas the detail is no longer available.

I remember enjoying reading Steve's and your build threads on Lexusworld. It's a shame that's all gone as it was such a good resource

Thanks Glyn. Steve was posting on clublexus before LW existed. I followed and took inspiration from his pioneering SC430 mods. I still had 2 Soarers when he was leading the way with the SC. When I met him for the first time at Bluewater I was like a starstruck autograph-hunting fan. 🤣

On the subject of the pillarless look with the rear quarter windows down, as stylish as it may appear, it always focuses my mind on just how important it is to keep the car the right way up.

I couldn't decide whether or not to build my own module and had seen this one on You Tube from Japan recently.  Having seen a short review on it today by a guy in the US on Facebook I thought I would give it a go and order one.  I think I could have build my own for a modest cost but I like the fact this is ready made and you basically plug it in. it was £133 and not that easy to buy as it is on a Yahoo Japan Auction site only for Japanese buyers so you have to use another Japanese site to buy it for you and then they ship it to you.   I will see how it goes and will update this thread.

So it’s arrived this morning from Japan after one week via FEDEX and TNT which out performs EVRI when they only have to travel 200 miles in the UK. It cost me another £22 to get it shipped so the total cost is £155. So windy and wet today and as I have to fit it outside I need a nice 735BF7F3-9EDE-4031-BC86-A8B41DF3D08A.thumb.jpeg.949a5d93edbf3ce75d8336c59870dc50.jpegdry day.

The sun broke out today so I took the opportunity to fit the window module. It was pretty straightforward just undo two plugs, fix those into two on the module then the other two on the module plug back in where the original ones were after removing the boot trim. This then left running two wires under the rear seat to the centre console box. The worst bit was feeding these two wires through from the boot which was a fiddle as the hole they needed to come through was just up behind the seat back. I was being lazy as if I had removed the back of the seat as well it would have been a lot easier. It then enters the centre console compartment at the back where there is a plastic cover you pop out to release the boot manually if you ever need to. On testing the unit everything works well as you can see in the photos.  A couple of observations are 1. The suppled cable is only long enough to reach into the centre console compartment so if you wanted to plug it in where the ashtray is you would have to extend the cable. 2. When you raise the quarter windows up or down you need to press once then again to go fully down or up.  These are not really a great issue though it you want to be able to control your quarter windows independently to the roof. The instructions are very clear but at the moment I haven’t committed to memory the sequence for which button to press when. I haven’t driven the car yet so cannot comment if there and difference to wind buffering in either the up or down position.
