Break bleed nipple dust caps

Recommended Posts

A very mundane post, but anyone servicing independently, maybe worth keeping an eye on these, just got picked up in my last dealership service. Seems they eventually break up and are worth replacing, so whichever mechanic is bleeding the breaks in future does not have to deal with corroded or ceased up bleed nipples. I can imagine worst case it gets sheared off, would be a right job to machine the thread back out.

Thats not the brake bleed nipple, that looks like the caliper slider pin/bush dust cover. If that gets dirt or contaminated the pads will not move freely resulting in uneven pad wear as it will seize up.

(Image looks blury so apologies if im wrong)

The black item more or less in the centre of the circle is definitely the brake calliper bleed nipple rubber cover, the greyer coloured item above and behind is the calliper pin boot.

The cover does prevent dirt and water ingress into the nipple but they tend not to extend fully onto the threaded section which is the bit that tends to seize.

New covers for what they cost are a good idea if damaged plus a smear of grease around the exposed nipple threads before fitting them.

Just noticed my use of "break" instead of "brake" 🫣

It was defo these that were rotted, come in at just under £2.50 each.

Apologies should have drawn a smaller circle, can see now I caught the slider pin in the circle also. In my haste to grab a snip from the commentary video Lexus provided.
