Origin B2 Data

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I've had my OB2 for 2 years now and I noticed that each and every time I update, the received data file comes down in seconds whereas the data file being sent takes minutes. At first they were both the same, but the more I use it the longer it takes to send the outgoing data.

I wanted to know exactly what data is being sent, is it my routes, times, speeds etc. or something else. I have e-mailed Origin on three seperate occassions and not once have they replied to me.

So, anybody got any ideas ?

Possibly Rodders but here's another spin...

I had to update mine via 56k dialup the other day :o

It took less than a minute to bring down the data from Origin, and then spent another few minutes chucking that data across the serial connection to the unit, during that time there was no upload or download activity happening across my connection, data was only being passed along the serial connection (I was bored so was running a sniffer!)

As far as Origin say the only data being transmitted up is basically the serial number of the unit, maybe versions and any camera spots that you've either marked as no longer existant or spots where the Origin DB does not contain a camera and they are new sites, in theory that should only be GPS co-ordinates so shouldn't take long to upload even at crappy 56k speeds

So, Trevman, is your machine fully cleaned and virus checked? Or do you run something like Torrent etc in the background which could be causing the traffic? In my experience the Origin does not cause much traffic to be sent at all....

well - lets play "guess the processing"

first of all, it downloads the raw data. I dont know the origin schema or data transfer mechanism - but I bet you all that data is highly compressable - and so even a large amount of data will fly down even only a 512k adsl pipe.

then it has to process that data and add it to its internal database. This gonna add some time.

Then, it has to cross reference the data you are trying to upload (such as new cameras etc) to its own (now updated) database to see if there is any data worth uploading. This also adds some time.

Then - it has to upload that data, at a significantly slower upload speed to the Origin server.

I can see that this would mean that it downloads raw data very quickly, and then process and upload new data - and this would take longer.

Is is sad that I automatically considered creating an activity diagram to show this?

Nah, my computer is sweet, nice and clean with nothing running in the background, my connection does however go through a broadband router and then onto the cable modem. So maybe there's some other traffic going through the router to other computers which is slowing it down.

The main reason for concern was that when I first got my OB2, the first few updates I made the data was uploaded very quickly, but it's been getting gradually slower & slower the more I use it (and maybe the more miles I clock up). I thought maybe the unit was storing information other than new camera locations and sending it to Origin maybe for data research purposes. Origin won't give me an answer on the subject.

Not really sure how long it takes during an update as I normally just leave it to do its thing, but have you noticed how its operation changes subtely after an update.

mine now beeps and flashes between sat strength and normal display when I go through a tunnel  it used to just stay on sat strength until regaining signal.

I didn't think its operation would change unless you download updated firmware :duh:
