Since BMW, Mercedes diesels got auto i would of thought Lexus would of also . & considering most japanese diesel cars in japan are auto anyway. Dont think i own a is220d or any other diesel passenger car atleast not my nxt car. u wanna save fuel just get a smaller engined car.

It's a shame, that Lexus have decided not to provide an auto-box with the diesel offering from day one though

They won't sell enough diesels to justify designing an auto gearbox.

Most cars in Japan are autos but hardly any are diesels so it would really only be for the European market and although the diesel engine itself will be fitted to Toyota cars as well, they will be front wheel drive so the gearbox would just be for the IS.

I suppose they have done their homework but it's like everything else - how do you know until it's available ?

I would certainly buy a diesel auto.

Wonder what the ratio is for Beemers on diesel auto/manual sales in the UK ?

I think that some like me until recently haven't looked at new car costs and have a unrealistic veiw of where lexus may sit in the market.

Wasn't it on top gear or fifth gear recently that quoted the top or the range tricked out modeo thingy costing £28K only a small diffenace to a fully tricked out IS250.

A mazda rx8 fully tricked out is approx £27K.

As for the wrong type of people getting a lexus, if like me you have a is200 and paid less for that, than a new rover 220 sdi in 97( 15K) it doesn't strike me that lexus are there competeting with the german mafia.

The car is nice but it is a thirsty thing and anything to make peole look at a car rather than dismiss it as a below 30mpg guzzler is a good move.

dunno which merc garage your asking, but that is over priced.

There is no need to ask a garage, the prices are there on their website in a .pdf and the BMW site has a car configurator.

I used both to compare costs with the new IS

BMW was £38K and Merc was £37K.
