Winter Driving Tip

Recommended Posts

OK - I've pinched this from a newsgroup - so can't vouch for its accuracy but, thought I'd share anyway.

;)

Snow and ice will be here soon, so I thought I would pass on a seasonal (car) driving tip. It is well worth knowing.

If, when you attempt to pull away, one of your drive wheels is on ice, and the other is on an un-iced surface, your car will not move. Drive is always supplied to the wheel with least resistance. The wheel on the ice will spin.

Posh cars (and all lorries) have differential (diff) locks, but in fact, you can lock the diff on any car, provided that the handbrake acts on the driven wheels.

If you find that you cannot pull away because one wheel is spinning, gradually apply the handbrake, increasing revs as you do so, to prevent stalling. When the resistance provided by the brake shoes exceeds your rolling resistance, your diff will lock, and off you go.
