Caliper Servicing - Finished!

I've finally got around to doing something about the brake judder on my IS200. :duh: I jacked up the car with the handbrake off after a long drive and the rear wheels didn't turn easily so I'm going to service the rear calipers. I've got a rear caliper seal kit on order from lexus and I've got cocktail sticks and blue tac :arrrggg-matey: . Anyone else done this and got any tips?

I did it on my first car, a MkII Escort (at the time 10yr old - I can't quite grasp this my-first-car-is-a-Lexus-at-only-something-teen thing :tomato:), but that was a while ago - erm 18 years ago.

On the rear you have shoes as well as pads :D

Erm yeah thanks. I won't be touching the shoes and the pads will just get a clean. Its the pistons I'm sorting out this time. If that doesn't work then I'll replace the discs in case they've got pad material imprinted or are warped and I'll replace the pads while I'm at it.

I was only saying that if you wheel not turning, that it could be the shoes that need adjusting, if it was the disc then you will be able to see it it is warped when you take the wheel off.

But if you are sure its the pistons thats at fault then ok :D

I collected the seal kit today. Its got a sachet of red goo in it. Anyone know what thats for?

use the red goo if you want to go further down the rabbit hole :winky:

i bet its seal lube that you apply before you fit the seals either that or caliper grease

ok thanks. wondered if it might be for lubing the seals as some instructions I found on the web suggested using brake fluid for doing that.

Phew. One done, one to go. Its hard work and sooo fiddly. If it wasn't for some tips I found here...

... I'd probably have got stuck. I can understand why when other people have had sticking calipers lexus have just replaced the caliper but at £260 each side + labour I'm hoping this will work and save me a lot of money.

Looks like the red goo is to put around the dust boots where they fit in the bore judging by the presence of old goo when I removed the old ones.

OK both done now. Nothing seems to leak and the brakes actually stop the car. Phew. Just need to take it out for a proper test drive and see if the brakes no longer stick when hot and if the judder has gone.
