Hello.

Take a look at the Garmin web site, look for the STREETPILOT 3 its the same price but you can move it easily from one car to the other in 2 mins, has voice guidance and colour screen, if you do buy get the DLX VERSION its alot more for a little more.

I second that. The Garmin street pilot is seriously nice. I don't have one, I've seen it working and have been tempted recently. One of my friends has just bought one from eBay I think so I'll be heading to his house soon to knick it off him :D

Don't forget to also look at the PDA versions, I've got the NavMan 3400 (£300) although I already owned the iPAQ that you need to run it. This is an excellent bit of kit, has voice navigation, automative re-routing, POI etc, everything the more expensive units have and you get to keep the excellent standard head unit.

Is it true that it can take up to around 20 mins sometimes to get your postioning when you first switch it on? Also I read somewhere that certain makes of windsreens effects the quality of signal you get. Reading the reviews put me off from buying one. Shame really because I was really keen :(

If I switch mine on in the car in the morning (which is classed as a cold start) I have a fix within a couple of minutes. If I drive immediately it is slower but still within 3 minutes which is within a few hundred yards.

There are two main competitors 'NavMan' and 'TomTom', TomTom are known for much quicker 'fixes' but the software isn't as flash.

If you have a heated or heat reflective windscreen you will have problems with either the PDA type or Garmin (they work in the same way and the windscreen will block the signals) but I haven't had any problems in the Lexus or the Merc. If you did have problems you'd have to get a re-radiating antenna, which would also improve the fix times.

Actually A re-radiating antenna won't do anything for the TTFF times on the Navman as this is due to interference from the main processor (I'm told) My Navman also works fine with the IS windscreen

even with the complete bundle (around 7-800 notes with the IPAQ) it's still cheaper than many in car systems. and has Voice direction into the bargain.
