Pc Help Needed

been having trouble with my pc's cd rom drive for a while and decided to get one of them external ones thinking it would solve all problems ,got it home plugged it into the usb and guess what it comes up with the same message

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

any idea what this is or how to solve the problem as i am useless with computers ,seems now i have one internal drive with same problem as the new external one i have just bought ,so guessing problem with puter not drives as i first thought . any help greatly appreciated .

what operating system are you using?

it is xp

seems there is a fix but i have to go into registry editor ,and i have no clue what that is and do not want to make matters worse

could you not just use system resore to a time when it was working properly?

tried that did not do it .could only go back to august for some reason

before you try and change the values of the registry, make a backup of it. Otherise if you do something wrong you can really mess up windows and it wont boot
