Heated Seats - Should I Give Up!

Hi

i have just replaced the drivers seat on my MK3 with a seat from a similar car which had only done 50K miles. Obviously the condition of the seat is almost new however the heated seat elements (which i was expecting to work) still do not work - surely they should last longer than 50K miles??? The switch lights up etc but no heat - Should i just give up and accept it??

I used to have a 1993 Pajero and the heated seats worked a treat.

Do you know for definite it is the heaters at fault? Have you applied 12v straight from the Battery to the connector? Could be a loom issue.

Geoff thanks for you reply - i have only had the car 3 months and upon reading this site i have come to the conclusion that it is the elements because the passenger side works fine. The electrics seat adjustment on the driver side also works fine meaning the electrics are all good - so for that reason i havent investigated the electrics.

It will be a knackered element - I bet yer. Take them out, like wot I told you, and replace them. Don't give up - it's February, after all!

How easy is it to undress the seat and is it easy to put back together again looking just like it did at the start?

Jellybean is probably right but give it a quick check with a meter or even a bulb if you can mate - it was a relay in one I looked at a while ago. (although I couldn't tell you where it was, I only tested for power at the seat) he took it into the dealer.

Don't they have 4 separate heater pads in? I could be wrong and thinking of a newer model.

According to the manual there is a separate relay for each seat but it does not provide the location of this.

If you can locate the 2 relays swapping them around will prove or eliminate this unit.

Pin 9 Red/Yellow wire is the +12v from the relay to the seat heater element and pin 2 white/black is the earth connection.

You could go to our local friendly Lexus dealer and just ask for a quote to get it fixed. That way you may find out what's wrong with it.

Any Lexus dealers reading this will no doubt be delighted with my suggestion.

MiQ, how did you get on, i need to get my drivers seat fixed too, but I like to do some more research before taking the seat out or delving into any wiring looms?

A zero cost solution would be to wear warmer clothes in the car.

The LS and GS cars have never had brilliant heated seats compared to their German rivals where you can get the chance to have multiple heat settings. (I realise that the latest LS and GS models do have variable heat settings).
