Welcome to LOC & good luck with your search :D

The mileage is not a factor so long as it has been serviced regularly/looked after.

Check inner front tyres for wear, and ball joints for any play/noise.

Check if timing belt has been replaced as this is a must for a higher mileage car (60,000+).

Check water pump for signs of leaks (left side of engine as you look from the front)

With a budget of £3.5k you are probably looking at 1999/2000 registered cars with 100k+ miles on the clock. Don't be concerned with the mileage too much, Toyota/Lexus cars can take the high mileage as long as they have been serviced regularly. Look for service history, (not just stamps, but invoices- main dealer/indy).

Also make sure the timing belt (with Idler and Tenisioner) has been replaced (look for proof, ie: reciepts). The timing belt should be changed at 60k or every 5 years, whichever comes first. Not much goes wrong on the IS- look for leaking waterpumps, knocking balljoints, corroding alloys and jammed CD players. Also check for inside tyre wear on the front, if the tyres on the inside are bald but the rest of the tyre has a decent amount of grip this indicates a problem with a car geometry (wheel alignment). A trip to Wheels-In-Motion (Tony Bones) will fix this.

Welcome to LOC btw.
