Having Timing Belt Changed, Should I Do Water Pump As Well?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

My car is going in for its 80k/6yr service, and im having the timing belt changed at the same time. Should I get the water pump change as well. Lexus want 190 quid for one, is that about right, or can I get one cheaper else where and just get them to fit it.

Regards Gareth

Most people (including me) have changed the waterpump when the timing belt was done for piece of mind. As most the of engine is stripped down to change the belt it makes sense to change the waterpump now- saves future labour costs if/when the waterpump fails.

If funds are tight then replace the waterpump when it fails, if not then replace it now.

A waterpump should cost £100 ex VAT from Lexus- your price of £190 is that supply and fit?

Yep. change the water pump at the same time if you can. Otherwise if it fails relatively soon afterwards you'll be kicking yourself, because they'll have to take all the belts off again to swap it.

As Kam05 said, should only be about £100 for a waterpump and it shouldn't be much to fit if they're doing the cam belt at the same time.

Blueprint part number for water pump is

ADT39185

You can find your nearest stockist from their website by putting in your postcode. Most motor factors will supply them - our local one is Dingbro - don't know if you have them near you.

crap . i was mis informed as i thought these had a chain ,another worry. any how toos? or picks i can pull up . cheers chris

No, they don't have a chain, they have a belt and if it snaps it will cause expensive engine damage (it is an "interference" engine on the IS200). The original schedule for cam belt change was 100,000 miles, but Lexus revised that down to 60,000 miles (or 6 years). It's easy to take the cam cover off slightly to have a look at the belt, to see what sort of state it's in.

There's a guide on how to change the cam belt over in the Workshop section, with pictures.
