Is200 Dash Light Dimmer

checked and no idea where the tail light relay is but panel fuse is fine

Tail light relay is on the back of the fuse board.

oh ok and defogger relay?

Same.

hmmm no idea how to get it.

could me having disconnected the light for the ash tray have anything to do with it?

I wouldn't have thought so because they're all connected in parallel, so removing one should't affect another. I actually don't think the tail light relay is that likely to be the problem, that was more of a long shot.

Given that in later cars the dimmer does dim the whole dash, I think it's most likely to be the dimmer itself, i.e. broken/stuck.

yes, the lighting is earthed at various points, one of the points it at the centre console with the ashtray lighting

alright I'll give it a go and see if pluging the light back in will fix the problem. I havent had it plugged in for quite sometime now because I put coins in the ashtray and man does it heat up with the light on.
