Traction Control Problem

Recommended Posts

The only time generally the traction control system comes into operation is with the weather we're having at the moment i.e.snow.

However this year mine was OK for a short period then the TRAC light that indicates the TRAC system is operating by flashing decided to come on and stay on consequently disabling the traction control system and ABS but no warning lights came on except the TRAC activation light.

Stopping and restarting the engine resumed correct operation for the same time period.

After a bit of research I read the codes for both ABS and TRAC to get 43 on TRAC ( meaning there is a non specific fault in the system. not very useful) and ABS code 54 which indicates the Traction Control Pump Motor is on longer than normal.

The solution was to bleed the TRAC accumulator.

After doing this I cleared the codes and took the car out on the snow covered road on my estate and all was well.

One thing I didn't realise was you have to top up the brake fluid with the engine at idle.

Anyway another "free" DIY repair I would not like to guess the cost at Lexus/Toyota as they would have probably replaced the pump/accumulator and traction accuator for many ££££'s but there again you do get free coffee!

Hi Steve

What is a TRAC accumulator, and how do you bleed it?

Found my wheels spinning in mud trying to exit a car park after the Twickenham rugby on Sunday, and noticed the traction light was on (not blinking). Does that mean it was not operational then?
