What I Need For 60k Service

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I know this 60K service is a repeated question but I just want to share my experience and seek some advice.

I called today to get the quote from the lexus dealers for my 54 Reg IS200 60K service. I was quoted between £600- £845 from three dealers. One who quoted £845 was charging me £635 just for service as I was told parts will costs £240 including timing belt, tensioner etc.

I was shocked and annoyed to learn that they are charging so much just for labour.

following parts will cost me £240 if I buy from lexus main dealer:

1- Oil & Oil filter

2- Spark Plugs

3- Air & Pollen filter

4- Timing belt, Tensioner

5- some kind of washer which I forgot for what purpose

6- Gearbox oil & break fluid

Q1-Now I want to know if the above price is reasonable? or I can buy the same from somewhere else much cheaper? Could anyone recommend me place to buy all genuine parts online or in a shop in Manchester area!

Q-2: Is there anything else I should get as well at the same time like, break pads, Coolant, Water pump, anti freeze etc. Please suggest.

Thanks in advance

Cheers

im in the same predicament-i was in lexus today and it came out at £585 inc vat for PARTS AND LABOUR

CAMBELT & TWO TENSIONERS

WATERPUMP***

BYPASS PYPE ****

2 X BYPASS PIPE O RINGS***

i think ill be going for this as an indy can do the rest of the work-lexus gaurentee their work for 12months and would replace the engine for a NEW one in the event of a cambelt failure-im still sitting on the fence but leaning towards lexus.

Was reccomended to anather guy but when i spoke to him regarding major service he hadnt planned on using fancy IE-OEM spark plugs-peasants i dont need touchin my lex ,,,,

Japparts and www.lexuspartsdirect.co.uk also supply OEM Toyota parts as well- they maybe cheaper than your local Lexus dealer? I'd buy genuine parts and find a local Indy to do the work if I was you.

Have a go at haggling the price down too, I paid £695 for my 60k service at Lexus.

Go for a service plan! It might cost you a bit upfront due to the closeness of your service though. Lexus have just brought out a new plan for cars older than 3 years. My next service is the big 60k, no cam belt to change but on the GS the plugs need changing so you're looking at £650 ish! I went for the plan for the next 3 services, 2 major and 1 minor. The price was around £980 which is a bit of a bargain, for a GS anyway! £70 a month, 0%, a good deal I think, historically they weren't. The price includes, 25% off parts, 15% off labour and if your car needs any parts, eg pads, 25% off those as well.

A chap had bought a service plan for the next 9 services on his 1999 gs, £25 per month!

I don't work for Lexus, I just thought that their plan finally made a little sense! :)

They've definitely dropped the prices of these service plans - will have to ask about it next time I'm at the dealers.........

When I was there on Saturday my dealer had a folder full of new service agreements, I think I saved around £300.

I paid just over £600 for a full 60K service, inc plugs, belt and tensioner change plus an mot at Lexus Aberdeen for my 04 IS200. Seemed very reasonable, but I think you have to barter a bit with these guys because originally they quoted me £850. I've found that it's always worth asking to speak directly to the service manager for the best prices.

From what the other members are saying these service plans seem like a good way to reduce the servicing costs in the longer term though. I might look into it myself.

Hi friends,

Thanks to all who replied my post and to Knitware for suggesting service plan. Today I signed up for the 3 year service plan including first one 60K service and two minor ones. Total cost £689!!

As I mentioned in my previous post I was quoted £600-£845 alone just for £60K service, considering that it seems a bargain. I paid the half price and remining balance on 0 % interest free 18 instalments. I will book my service next week.

I am just wondering why there is so difference in the service plan and the normal quote? I tried to read small print on the contract but could not see any nasty clause!

Cheers

Just one thing, are you sure that the cambelt change is included in the service plan?

I don't think the cambelt change is normaly included in the 60k standard service and is an extra charge.

Sorry I was wrong. The cam belt is not included in this plan. The sales man lied to me when he sold me the plan but when I tried to book service today I was told by the service manager I will have to pay extra from Timing belt. It was not cost effective anymore so I cancelled my plan!

Back to Indis again!

I have recently replaced the Cambelt + Associated parts and given my Lex it's Full 60,000 mile Service . I detail below what the parts and labour costs were:-

Items supplied by JAPARTS (OEM Lexus/Toyoto parts supplied) TOTAL COST OF £287.47(includes V.A.T)

ie:-Tensioner + Idler + Cam belt + Waterpump + Bypass pipe + 2xseals +3 No Belts (A/C; Alt & P/S).

Items supplied by OPIE OILS; TOTAL COST OF £70.60 (includes V.A.T)

ie: Fully Synthetic Engine Oil 5w-30 (Motul 8100 Eco-energy) + 6 No Denso iridium IK20 Plugs.

Items supplied by LEXUS Chester; TOTAL COST OF £10.75 (includes V.A.T)

ie: Oil Filter + Sump Washer.

As this was the first time i had done this type of work on a Lexus it took me about 5 hrs in total at my home address (anyone with a bit of mechanical know how; a basic tool kit and a set of axle stands could quite easily carry out this work).

If you are not mechanically minded you could scource the parts yourself and then get an independant garage with a good reputation to fit them for you. You then only have to pay for the 5 hours Labour costs?.

Note:-

1) I did not require an Air Filter as i have a re-useable K&N one fitted and the Gearbox Oil (Redline MT-90 fully synthetic) + Diff oil (Redline 75w 90 fully synthetic) + Pollen Filter were changed on the last service in 2008.

2) You can save quite a bit of money on part costs by specifying that you require Pattern Parts and not OEM parts

3) You can also save on oil as you do not have to use Fully Synthetic oils in the Engine/Gearbox/Diff.

Hope the above helps and safe motoring everybody.

I agree with Imperial on servicing your self... The IS200 is a very straight forward car to work on and you know that the job is done to your satisfaction. Whilst I work on mine, I tend to clean and spray grease on parts that I notice might need it as I go along so that parts don't rust up or seize through the winter... You can chose what lubricants you wish to use too. Just takes a decent tool kit and a bit of nowse

lexynik which lexus price a 60k service including water pump and cam belt at £585 sounds very cheap to me can you provide more details as i would like to get my local lexus to price match

thanks

gokhan

I think that the £585 inc. vat for PARTS and LABOUR quoted above by Lexynik are the costs for Cambelt change plus associated parts only (refer to my thread above for a cost comparison ie :Items supplied by JAPARTS total cost of £287.47. You are therefore paying them £297.53 (£585 - £287.47) to fit them. The 60,000 mile service costs would be extra.

Note:-

Local colleges run excellent Car Mechanics courses which would give you the know-how, confidence and skill to enable you to service yor own car at a fraction of the costs charged by the STEALERS. If we all did this they would then have to bring their Labour costs down from an eye popping £80/£95 per hour (their Skilled Technicians only receive a small fraction of this as wages) to a more acceptable/down to earth level.

Wishing you all a Happy and Cost effective motoring experience :whistling:

As you can see the £287.47 i quoted also includes Waterpump + By-pass pipe (or Hose whichever you prefer) therefore your still paying £297.53 Labour charges to the STEALERS. The 60,000 mile service costs (which is everything else i detailed in my original thread would be extra.

Hi Imperial, my 2004 200 Sport is coming up for its cambelt change & I will do the waterpump at the same time, so your post was really useful. Like you, I'm buying the parts from Japarts. I've got the cambelt , idler, tensioner & waterpump, but I can't find the "bypass pipe" and "2 x seals" (highlighted in your post above) on the Japarts website - please could you post the Japart part numbers? I can guess what the "bypass pipe" is but what are the seals for?

Also, what about the gasket for the waterpump - the new one from Japart does not seem to come with a replacement gasket. Very grateful for any help you can give.

I dealt with a very helpfull person called Ravi Hirani at JAPARTS and looking at my Invoice from them the part numbers and costs are as follows:-

J1626870031 By Pass Pipe @ £4.51 +VAT

J9030117016 2 Number Gaskets for By Pass Pipe ("O"-rings) @ £2.88 each +VAT.

If JAPARTS cannot supply them (when i ordered my parts Ravi as a favour got them for me from a Lexus dealer just up the road) then buy them from your nearest Lexus dealer-simples eh.

When fitting the new By Pass Pipe with fitted "O"-rings smear some rubber friendly grease (do not use a petroleum based grease as it eats/perishes all rubber items - same rule applies when using condoms you have been warned :whistling: ) on the "O"-Rings and inside the holes they go into so as to ease its assembly.

As regards a gasket for the Waterpump you don't need one as it's metal to metal contact. All i did was clean the face of the Waterpump and the part of the block it fits onto with a fine carborundum stone to remove any burrs etc (a fine flat file will do the job just as well) and used a thin smear of non hardening silicone type gasket sealant on both faces before bolting the Waterpump in place.

Good luck with your Cambelt change.

PS:- What are you going to spend the £297.53 you've saved by doing all the work yourself? :winky:

Imperial - thanks for the info, much appreciated. What to spend £297.53 on......hmmm tricky, 90 pints of beer, or 10 bottles of single malt maybe, pressie for the missus possibly, ...... or put it toward some ARBs!

Ormi, thanks also for the reminder about the diff oil too.

I think its worth noting especially as the is200 was built with a waterpump gasket that people offering advice on here really ought to point out that their advice is only an opinion and one which may not in actual fact be correct and that anyone following such advice would be doing it at their own risk

I stand corrected LEXYNIK i've just had a look in my engine bay.

You'r right, there was a thin metal gasket between the Waterpump and Block that after cleaning and de-burring i re-used following smearing with silicon type non hardening sealant.

My age i'm afraid is catching up with me!

No problem my pleasure.

This is what an Owners Club for me is all about ie:- members sharing information and giving advice/help & correcting incorrect information (with the proviso of course that they follow any advice given at THEIR OWN RISK).

Spending the £297.53 saving on the Missus or ARB's is a tough decision - rather you than me :winky:
