Replacement Key For Rx400H

Recommended Posts

Hello All

What a fantastic site! I own an RX400h, which I got new in October '05 and never before thought of joining the owners club....I did'nt even know there was one until a few days ago!

I am new to the forum and apologies in advance if my question has been asked before, but I tried searching the threads and I could not locate anything.

My query is this: I was given 3 (3 button) remote keys when I got the car, but 2 of these have now broken, ie. the plastic fob housing the remote/transponder have come away from the metal 'key' in both cases.

Naturally, I need a spare and I enquired with my local Lexus dealer, which wants the usual driving licence, V5 and utility bill to order another remote key. Thats all cool, but they also want approx £175+vat. Is it me or is that crazy!?

My only previous experience of replacing keys was for a previous Prius (also from the same dealership), a few years ago, which cost £60+vat approx.

Do I have to go to Lexus and pay their price, or is there a cheaper (but still legal!) option?

Many thanks in advance for whoever can help.

Hopefully you've still got the transponders. If that is the case you can buy blank keys off eBay making sure that the metal bit is the same length as your original keys. Then find a high street locksmith who will cut the keys for you. Put the transponder in the new key and away you go. Key off eBay approx £10. Cutting by locksmith approx £15.

Thanks rhosneigr for the speedy reply. I have been busy, so apologies for my own delayed response. Your help is much appreciated!

I bought case from eBay for £3.5, key cutting for £10 @ http://www.a1seecure.co.uk/

Make sure you cut it where they use electronic copy scan & cut key cutting machine like "Unocode 299 - Electronic Key Cutting Machine"

which gets the cut all in one go, otherwise your key will be wasted & ull need to buy a new blank one

Good luck.....
