Diy - Bluetooth Music Streaming Using A2Dp

Recommended Posts

In this guide I will show you how you can enjoy the comfort of stereo audio over Bluetooth on your Lexus.

Lexus models built before 2010 with Bluetooth support are limited to phone functionality only. The models built after this have the A2DP Bluetooth profile, which allows for mobile phones with A2DP to wirelessly stream music to the car.

My Lexus does not support A2DP. Therefore, in this guide I will show you how I've integrated A2DP into my Lexus by utilizing the factory OEM 3.5mm stereo jack auxiliary port in the central armrest.

Things you will need:

  1. Mobile Phone that supports A2DP (Iphone, HTC, Blackberry, etc.)
  2. Blackberry Bluetooth Music Gateway
  3. Mini Blackberry Car Charger.

The setup consists of a Blackberry Bluetooth Music Gateway device that resides in the central armrest. It is connected via a 3.5mm stereo jack to the auxiliary port and a blackberry mini car charger. This is paired to your mobile phone.

Once the initial pairing is complete, the device will then auto-connect with the phone every time the car is turned on. You can stream music wirelessly by selecting the AUX source on you car stereo.

At this point you're probably wondering if the Bluetooth phone functionality of the car will still work. The answer is YES.

That's it you're all done. You can now enjoy wireless audio streaming in your car.

Below is a video demonstration followed by some pictures of the blackberry device.

Very good. But I have that mini charger and when I have a USB plugged in I cannot close the armrest without bnding the cable to the extreme.

As my HTC has a 3.5 mm jack I just leave it in the armrest and connect it to the AUX jack. I suggest you use r-shaped 3.5 mm jack cable like this one, it is much easier to close the armrest and you won't have to bend the cable and risk damaging it:

Hi, this sounds good.

I have the 2009 IS250, what do you mean when you say it supports A2DP? I cannot get any sound out from my

Iphone directly to the car, have not tried the HTC desire yet. You must mean the 2010 version of IS?

How is the sound on that Bluetooth device? Many of these have very bad sound quality.

thanks

where would i be able to aquire one of these blackberry bluetooth music gateway, and what sort of cost. and i take it that a iphone is compatable. also would you be able to change music tracks via the buttons on steering wheel

The best place to buy these is on eBay. I purchased 3 of them at £25 each. There are currently no auctions at that price. There is only one seller selling at the moment for £99.95, which is way too much. If you check eBay every few days, they always pop up every now an then for around £20-£30 from private sellers.

It is compatible with Iphone as long as you have OS version 4.0 or above. It's also compatible with many other smartphones, like the HTC desire, Google Nexus, Blackberry etc.

In terms of controlling via steering wheel buttons, that's not possible. But if you have Iphone 3Gs or 4 you can use the voice control to command and play tracks using voice commands.

Hope that helps

I'm sure the 2009 models support A2DP (obviously as long as you have Bluetooth option in your car). If you have the Bluetooth option in your car, and your phone is paired correctly to the car, then everytime you play something from your Iphone (OS 4.0 or Above) it should stream out of your car's audio system. A late 2009 courtesy I had with Bluetooth had A2DP.

If you've done that and you still dont get any audio, then maybe your car hasnt got it.

The sound quality of my setup is awesome. You actually cannot tell the difference between the CD track and the Wireless Iphone track. It streams high quality stereo music

Dont understand what you mean by 'wireless' surely if you are driving around the best connection you are going to get through your Iphone is 3g / GPRS etc which in my experience is virtually useless for trying to stream music over internet as there are too many drop-outs due to weak signal?

By 'wireless' he means streaming music which is stored on his Iphone via Bluetooth NOT streaming music from the internet via this Iphone

I have a late-2009 IS250 SE with Bluetooth and my phone (a fairly basic Samsung)with Bluetooth works well as a hands-free device. However, when I play music on it, this doesn't play on the car audio system. What selections are needed on the car audio system - if I have tried slecting AUX but this doesn't work?

You shouldnt need to press AUX or anything. As long as your phone is paired to the car, when you play music on the device it should come out of the sound system of the car. It may be that your phone doesnt have the Bluetooth A2DP.

I have tried using my wife's brand-new Iphone 4 which, according to various web forums, does have A2DP and I still cannot play music over the car's speakers, even though the phone is correctly paired with the car. The car is a September 2009 IS250 SEL with all the bells-and-whistles multimedia - can anyone confirm if this had A2DP?

It seems I was mistaken. The A2DP is only available on 2010 models upwards. Sorry :tomato:

I've just done this mod using the above Blackberry Gateway and it works great.......So many thanks Ahmed. However I get interferance when its connected, just an awful noise from the speakers? I tried connecting my Iphone before direct via the 3.5 Aux with a cable and it made this noise, I thought by using this method it might cure it.

Any ideas anyone?

There is a problem when using the Aux port and the charging point next to it at the same time, it can sound cause interference. Are you using the charger next to the AUX port? I think dealers can fix this problem.

Yes I'm using the power port next to the Aux port to power the unit............any idea what the fix is?

Keith

Apparently Lexus dealerships can fix this under warranty.

Read this thread for more info: 12v Power Socket In The Armrest

But first check if this is really your problem. Simply disconnect the charger from the power port and check if you still have the interference (assuming the device may still run on battery).

Thanks Giorgio, sounds like this might be the problem reading the other forum. Trouble is I can't try with it disconnected as it's not Battery powered (like the iPhone) so I'll buy the noise supressor that they recommend and give it a go (see below). Thanks for your help and advice, much appreciated.

I'll report back when I have the part.

PS UPDATE.........I just tried my Iphone on Battery power with the Aux port and clear as as a bell, then connect up the power supply via the power port and hey presto horrible noise!!!

Ordered the noise supressor.

Just a quick update. If you have this noise problem when using the Aux 3.5mm input and charging port at the same time (when using and powering an iPhone/iPod for example) and you have not had the Lexus update carried out under warrenty, then this is the answer. Set it up today and it completely quashed any other interference making the Aux input a pleasure to use now.

This is the part that just fits inline from your device (iPhone/iPod etc)to the 3.5 socket in the armrest:

Bought via eBay from a US seller.

Oh OK - Then just get the Lexus Ipod Integration package for that - It works a dream! Get yourself an 80gb Ipod Fifth Gen fron the eBay for about £50 and you have weeks (no months!) worth of music you can listen to all controlled via the MM touch screen. Its fantastic sound quality as well,

Cheers
