Lubricating Tilt And In Out Steering Gears

Recommended Posts

Good idea Roy, I use the white aerosol grease on the door hinges,it is quite "runny" but stays put so a good compromise between oil which will run out and thick grease which may clog up with dust etc.

I bought a write off SLK, [panel damage] 2years ago and it's excellent for the electric roof hinges etc.

All the places you cannot smear grease on in the usual way.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but how do I access the motor so I can lubricate mine please? Which screws

do I need to remove?

Many thanks, Mark.

Hi Mark

Here's a tutorial that no doubt will help you:

Just to confirm how relatively easy it is, I have only lubricated the gears shown in the video, that is the tilt. I used white spray grease with PTFE, seems a bit smoother? The old stuff in there was also whiteish.

Mark.

That tutorial covers the up and down motor and gear. I know of two LS430's that have no in and out movement any more.

Is there a tutorial or similar for the in and out motor and gear, or can someone tell me where the in/out motor and gear is located so I can pass the info onto my buds?

The LS430 uses a completely different motor to the 400 which often fail but they are not repairable.

The replacement cost is horrendous but the same motors are used on some Toyota Landcruisers and these are considerably cheaper (cheaper still if bought from the USA).

Interesting!

My steerinhg wheel does not move out of the way like I thought it should when I turn the ignition off, and when I do try to adjust it, it seems to work in steps...so move the toggle switch and it seems to move one increment, release and move it again and it moves another.

My guess is something is knackered, but I may just have a look and spray some silicone grease in there to see if its anything gumming it up.
