I know it's not really possible to diagnose a noise issue for sure but just wondering if this is a problem others may have encounterd.

Both of my Alfas are off the road thanks to eagle-eyed MoT testers so my 1996 LS400 is presently my only means of transport, there being no viable public transport in the village.

The noise is a fairly loud whirr when the car is in drive and etiher held on the footbrake are travelling at parking speeds. It seems to disappear as soon as we get moving.

As ever, she otherwise does everything perfectly despite being close to 150,000 miles from new and having had the o/s front wing remodelled thanks to a passing bus.

Sounds like it must be coming from the transmission, if it starts when you go from N to D? Perhaps check the trans. fluid level

Rotd, here are a few suggestions---- If the noise is there when the car is held stationary on the footbrake, it can't be from the disc shields rubbing. Obviously, if it's from the engine area, as you 'get moving', the engine revs will rise and whatever is causing the whirring sound becomes more pronounced. Trouble is, at 150,000 miles it could be a number of things. Firstly though, you need to accurately pin point the area where the noise is coming from. Then ask yourself, is it worse as the revs rise? Does it happen in neutral or only in drive? Have you checked all the fluids as to correct levels and condition, i.e. power steering fluid (could be the pump) and the ATF in the gearbox? When was the last time either fluids were changed? Are you losing any water?(could be the water pump grumbling). On another tac, it could be an idler pulley bearing or belt tensioner bearing going out. Have you changed the ancilliary belt recently? Or, it could be the hydraulic fan clutch. Best to get it diagnosed at a friendly independant garage and go from there. If you take it to Lexus, rob a bank first. Titch LS.
