  1. Floggit believe me, when u compare a used Beemer or a Merc against a Lexus There is no comparison In terms of ride, quality, quietness, comfort you will not find better than a Lexus The only thing I would say is that the beemer can be a bit faster if it has a big bmw engine, but the rest of the car won't be anything like as good, and the big beemers are more thirsty (just) than a big lexus worth waiting for one that takes your fancy and worth travelling a few miles to get what you want
  2. I was told by the dealer I chatted to that all sports models (so make your own mind up) came into the country as standard cars and if someone wanted a sports model then a kit was ordered of a couple of boxes of bits and bobs to make them into sports models No change to anything under the bonnet or electronics or anyting else really Mind you many others still do this, it is all about marketing and selling more cars
  3. Go and wash your mouths out Do you really think our beloved All knowing *** Lexus would get something wrong ? Apart from having the wrong engine and the wrong gearbox on the list, the picture of the car does look sort of similar LOL I asked about this at the Lexus Church (Showroom where we gather to pray for a lottery win for a new 600) and was told the only difference is that the sport has slightly lower suspension, slightly different wheels and a boot trim spoiler (which does nothing apart from look cool and increase drag) oh and sport badges
  4. Standard Non Sport Mk 1 GS300 http://www.lexus.co.uk/approved_preowned/s...ND+TRANSMISSION Max. horsepower 218bhp (163kW) at 5800rpm Max. torque 219lb.ft (289Nm) at 3800rmp Standard "Faster" GS300 Sport http://www.lexus.co.uk/approved_preowned/s...ND+TRANSMISSION Max. horsepower 209bhp (156kW) at 5800rpm (DIN) Max. torque 203lb.ft (275Nm) at 4800rpm I am so glad I bought one of them slower non sport models LOL
  5. Legally when you bought the car was there mention in the advert or even verbally that the car had a full main dealer service history ? If the answer is no, then I am afraid it is tough luck, and better luck next time If the answer is yes then a contract was agreed based upon certain terms The sellers terms (namely the selling company) were the description and staments made by their staff (immaterial if they have left died or been shot out of a cannon, the company is who your contract is with not the salesman) Your contract was to agree to buy the car as described for the agreed sum If their description was false, misleading or wrong then they have broken the contract similarily if you failed to pay for the car it has failed As the selling company have broken the contract by supplying goods differing substantially from the contract then you do have a right to cancel the contract and ask for your money back unless you receive a written assurance from a certifiable source e.g. Lexus GB or someone like the AA or RAC Technical services that all services had been completed on time and fully You do have a right (should you choose it) and want to keep the car to demand a refund of the difference in value between a car with and without full dealer service history, as you have in fact paid for that and not received it OR If you have bought the car on finance then you also have a contract with the finance company to finance you the car as described, wrong or misleading description, wrong finance wrong contract
  6. I took the pump off and the actual shaft into the pump had snapped, hence the sudden stop in pressure A quick email to the scrap yards and a second hand unit all mine for £55 delivered inc VAT Now that was a result if you ask me dead easy to change, a couple of easy to get to bolts, 2 hoses and a refill with power steering oil and full power steering again Total swap time for the job, 15 minutes, it took me longer to find my key that I dropped down between the seats
  7. yep next stage is the vacuum hoses or a bad wire on the MAF The MAF could also just be full of the proverbial cr**, there was a section on here somewhere about cleaning the MAF, anyone help with a better memory ?
  8. next quick test if you have bad starting from cold but good from warm get under the bonnet and pull the EFI fuse Turn the engine over for about 10 seconds with the fuse out and no throttle This cleans all the cylinders of fuel as the EFI fuse out "turns off" the fuel injectors Ignition off and nip around the front and put your EFI fuse back in quickly try and start the engine If it starts easy and runs ok then you have a fuel management problem, the brains are probably trying to cold start or overfuel from cold Most probable cause is the Engine temperature sensor reading that you are in the antarctic and throwing fuel in by the bucketfull, once warm this cause usually dissapears This is what happened to me, do not get confused with the radiator coolant temperature sensor, the engine temperature sensor is a different thing, and a quick cheap fix if that is the problem
  9. Probably closer to 13 or 15% under list they get it for at the start of their year or sales period Then the dealer gets extra discount if they hit and pass the target of cars sold that the manufacturer sets for them to be a franchise dealer, usually another 6 to 8 % So a canny dealer will sell loads of cars near the margin to get past the trigger point for the extra target discount Then they can sell cars a bit cheaper and make some money as they should be able to Nothing wrong with making money in my book but we all love a bargain If there is an extras list on the car you want and you want something from that list, these may seem expensive, but the dealer will get a hell of a lot more discount on extras than on the base car, usually in the region of 30%+ well worth adding extras if you really want them, and haggle like hell to get these at cost or just a bit over, it can make a hell of a difference to the overall price, even worth paying list on the car and getting free extras sometimes can work in your favour That is why ex demo fully loaded with kitchen sink and bidet cars seem a real bargain sometimes, all the extras cost not a lot when taken in a package Only problem with buying a Lexus is there isn't a lot missing to be added on afterwards so haggling is all about the list price Now here is a little tip, get a price on the car you are interested in, then ask about finance, then haggle hard and a bit harder Most dealers can make more on commision on the finance than the car itself, they won't even mind discounting the car price big time to get a whole wedge of finance commision at a good rate for them When you have negotiated the good on finance price Go back and tell them your Auntie / Uncle / Grandma has passed on and you can pay cash and you want it at that price It is very difficult for them to back pedal and put the profit back into the cost you negotiated without admitting that they make a massive cut on the finance
  10. hell someone else is alive under Bristol Hi floggit, you are right, very few Lexus down this way, and LS400 are like rocking horse poo in the desert inn Devon I had to travel to Wales to get my GS and although I have had a few problems really they are really a lot less than on other second hand cars I have bought in the past The best thing is that all the problems are mechanical and bolt on and bolt off things that we should really expect on cars of any marque of the age we want, suspension and brakes are the main things but after all they just unbolt and new ones bolt on Buy a Ford and you don't get an optional body kit you get an optional body, at least with a Lexus you get a solid car, I just had mine MOT and the mechanic said all the running gear and underneath was better than a new car in condition
  11. 8% if you are happy with it is fine I wouldn't be over the moon I have to admit, but I am hard negotiator and if I don't get what I want then I unleash the Dog of War Negotiator, namely the wife who sometimes I reckon they will give her the stuff to get rid of her One holiday in Turkey she argued over a huge amount of Turkish Lira and when she walked away after about 10 minutes beating this poor guy into submission, regardless of him not eating and having 7 kids to support She had saved 14 pence, but she was happy Basiclaly in any deal there has to be 2 happy people, the seller and the buyer, if either isn't happy then it is a bad deal, you feel that you have paid to much and you won't go back, the seller feels he hasn't made enough look out when you go back Quick secret with buying a car, have a look on a nice sunny day at what you want, decide on a fair price, then go back on a wet Sunday and haggle like hell, I bet you get more discount as there is no one else around he will be able to sell to
  12. If the Main Stealers did what they said they did and cleaned the connectors to the sensor and it worked well even for a few miles, then I would think that is where the problem is The problem with electrics on any Lexus is that unless the brains in the car gets the right info it gets all confused and tries to make up its own mind what is wrong or just shuts down The next problem is that if they cleaned the wires and connectors once because they had either corroded or just got covered in the proverbial cr*p or dead budgies from the road, cleaning them once may not have been enough In fact if they cleaned them only once there is a high probability that they may even have dislodged some more dirt that has fallen on the sensor from the surrounding area First thing to do is to get to the sensor and really spring clean everything in the area, not just the connector or sensor itself Now get some electrical contact cleaner and spray that into over and onto anything that looks like it is a connector or plug and inside the plug Don't be tempted to shove screwdrivers or metal things in the plugs to clean the contacts unless you disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes, as you may short a circuit to the ECU and have a real problem and huge expense Next spray liberally WD40 over everything in the area, wires connectors sensor to stop any more water or dirt being a problem Put it all back together and try it, if it works great, if it doesnt or the problem comes back then it will be on to the nice auto electrician and his laptop to sort it out
  13. Plenty of fluid and all seems to run fine seems to be ample pressure in the system (quick crack of pipe joint to check) but nothing or very little at the steering end was hoping that it would be a relay or something that brings in the proportional steering stuck Sorry Peter how can air con hurt the steering ?
  14. Hi all One for the boffins Parking up all nice and easy, and my power steerng just stopped, yes I can turn the wheel, but it as if it has suddenly either stopped or dropped into motorway speed mode I don't think it is the pump as I have never heard of a pump that stops as sudden and goes from all to nothing in an instant Is there a fuse or a relay that controls the power steering that could have blown, I have checked all the fuses I can find and all seems good with them
  15. Or add a nitrus kit I got a proportional injection kit winging its way from the jolly old US of A So shouldnt be long before I scare myself stupid again
  16. Hi there I have a 95 GS300 and had the same knocking sounds really rough at tickover then disspaears when the revs climb a bit Mine was just a fan belt clicking way but sounded like a metallic cclick and bump as it went around Hope yours is the same fault dead easy to change when you work out the knitting pattern for the belt
  17. Hey Richard Hope the car is a good one, and you enjoy it, let us know how it gets on I once got in my neighbours TVR, being 6ft 5 I couldn't get out again without sitting my bottom on the pavement and wriggling backwards, great car but I could never be cool in it or getting out of it definatly
  18. After 2 and a half years sorry no chance, if it was 2 and a half months then yes they wouold be liable and duty bound to repair it I did my own GS300 Mk 1 head gasket, ok i am an engineer, but it was done in the car park with very basic tools off and back on dead easy, the standard of engineerin in the engine makes it a pleasure to work on but if you do it yourself definately get the head skimmed before you put it back on and also ask for the machinist to pressure test it
  19. OK a few things, based on my experiences with my GS300 A 1994 GS300 at £2,700 is overpriced, you can get an A1 newer model for that much cash or you should be looking at under 2K for a 1994 model First thing is look closely at all the gaps doors boot bonnet and around the lights, Lexus should be even and not show any difference, Lexus as you are aware is about quality, run away from anything that has gaps wrong or bad fitting anything Make sure everything works, I mean everything, all the seats, all the switches, all the sunroof including the tilt, dont forget the rear windows and all the lights, the radio the cd player everything Take a test drive for at least 20 minutes, when you stop open the bonnet and feel the top radiator hose, do not open the radiator top under any circumstances, if the hose is solid be prepared for a head gasket, the hose should be firm but have some give in it, apart from that the engine is bombproof ON the test drive think Gearbox, check it is smooth, apart from the LS this is probably the smoothest auto box on the market, any judder or jumping means bad things, kick down should be good and crisp and immediate on flooring the throttle and also check this in pwr and normal, also on the gearlever is a button on the handle, this is the overdrive / 4th gear on a flat road low throttle and doing about 40 click it in and out you should feel it change up and down as you click the button Basically the ride should be smooth, probably quieter than anything else you have driven, listen for any knocks or squeeks, mine is the same age as the one you are looking at and it is quieter and smoother than my mates new BMW 5 series Cam belt changes should be listed on the service book, it isn't a hard job on the GS, I have done it myself and it is a lot easoer than a transverse Ford or Vauxhall, no cam belt change in time means no buy, unless the garage changes it before you buy and you want to see it done, as it is to easy to say yes it was changed and all they have done is write it in, just ask when they are going to do it and pop along, if it hasnt moved since you saw it or the front of the engine isnt off then walk away. Peace of mind is worth a lot everyone says tyres can be expensive, but actually that is a myth, I bought 2 tyres for my Lexus cheaper than 2 tyres for my Nissan Pickup, and I bet they will last longer Being in a Lexus is about enjoying the drive, and boy will you enjoy it if you get a good one, I go for a drive just to enjoy the car, so will you Oh and if you are worried about fuel consumption,,,,,, go and buy a Punto diesel,,,,, the Lexus is pretty economical when you compare it against others the same size Good luck and hope you enjoy it
  20. the whole village thinks they have a new idiot there I am standing behind the car in the car park closely watching the arial calling to her inside Radio 2 Radio 4 Radio 1 Radio Cornwall Radio Devon And I am still watching the arial go up a bit, down a bit One of the neighbours kids comes over startes at me for a while and asks me "Are you OK" Talk about feeling a prat
  21. when I was running my business we had about 50 computers running in the office One morning we came in to find only 1 left, and that had a message on the screen saying thank you for the computers :tsktsk: but we had a cunning plan in place, our software wizzkid person had installed a programme that should a computer get nicked or even taken home unauthorised, then as soon as it was connected to an internet connection that wasn't ours it emailed to me the isp details and telephone number that it was connected to we got back over 40 of the computers in 2 weeks and the thief was caught, in fact the :tsktsk: worked for me, but not for long afterwards I often wonder if that sort of programme is commercially available, as to remove it the thief would have to have changed the hard disk etc, which would have made it to expensive to bother nicking
