  1. I have always the utmost respect for the vast majority of garages, as the vast majority seem to know what they are on about But something doesn't seem quite right here as Mac says 10.5 to 1 compression would only give a maximum of 156 psi and that is on a brand new engine with zero wear if you are lucky, the only way to get more than that is to up the compression falsely by oil filling the cylinders during the test Ask the garage to put their compression findings in writing, if they are genuine then they will do that no problem along with an estimate for the exploratory work and then also ask why the fault codes were showing on both banks the chances of both banks suddenly blowing a piston without blowing the engine up completely is nil as it would cause a catastrophic failure to do that on a modern engine such as the Lexus As far as I can understand each bank richness is measured by the O2 sensor in the exhaust, a blown piston, head gasket or similar simply cannot affect the other bank as they are not connected physically I reckon an ecu fault or a wire falling off the sensor is to blame, it has to be a common link between the 2 sides and that only indicates electronic failure
  2. Just had a thought,,, the analysis showed overrich on both cylinder banks ?? and u have a 430 V8 a piston even blown completely or a head gasket or a valve on one bank would not affect the other bank, i would be tempted to look at an electrical or fueling fault first that is common to both sides
  3. Sorry but pistons don't bend, they may crack, or rings break or wear, or, a bore crack which on a standard Lexus or almost any other new car is rare unless you have avoided oil and filter changes or have trashed the hell out of the car or run it through rubbish with no air filter and sucked in garbage Did the garage tell you if they had done a compression test wet and dry ? A dry test can show a drop in compression but that is only part of the test If a cylinder shows a drop then they should put some engine oil in the cylinder through the spark plug hole and restest If the compression rises it is because the oil has sealed the piston / bore gap temporarily, if the compression stays down then the fault has to be above the piston head such as a bent or sticking valve, a head crack (rare) or a cylinder head gasket In any case the only real answer is to take the head off and have a look
  4. Not exactly Lexus orientated but definately ebaY scam time We were looking for a marquee for our archery club and one came up on ebaY,,, looked good,,,, looked fine,,,,,, seller replied straight away to my email questions,,,,, being sold by a church in surrey that no longer needed it although it wasn't listed under marquees but awnings and no one else seemed interested as we were the only bidder all seemed good I bid and won it, no one else bid on it Now the fun started First email from the seller said sorry but the church committee won't sell it at that low low price, which quite honestly was a ridiculous price, and far far lower than the max bid i put on it So in the basis of I wanted the marquee, they wanted a fair price, we had a email haggle and agreed what i thought was a fair price The seller emailed and said he would set up a protected buy now deal on ebaY so we are both protected and committed to deal said email duly arrived and all looked like a real ebaY email Of course a compete forgery and a western union scam to get cash out of me I twigged it only when I saw western union money transfer instead of paypal I blew up the pictures and enhanced them with a photo programme i have as all ebaY pics are rubbish definition, and yes the marquee was at a church but all the number plates on the cars were american ebaY informed and they traced the deal to a dead end at a web cafe in USA Seems he picked me as a target as there were about 20 other bids on the marquee but the seller cancelled these as soon as they went up to make it look like I was the only bidder Be careful as these scams are really getting silly,
  5. new tyres about every 2 weeks ? A big smile on those lucky enough to have one A big frown on the M3 and M5 drivers,,,,,,,, kept the receipt did you Mr M3 owner ?
  6. OK I am a tad confused A lot of people and the manual and the drawings and even Lexus tell me the fuse panel is in the passanger footwell, and I found mine is in the drivers footwell, found the fuse blown and of course it was the second to last I took out, to see in the fuse panel a nice torch and a shaving mirror as with the pedals in the way it is a tad akward when you are as big as me So why is the fuse panel not in the passanger footwell and in the drivers side, is this a Mk1 or Mk 2 thingy ? Still looking for the correct vacuum pipe layout on the resevoir, although I found a drawing in my manual, it seems to miss the vacuum resevoir on the schematic and isnt clear enough on the drawing to make sense and I still can't find where the damn thing goes to,,,,, help please
  7. I have had a nice long holiday and left the GS alone for a while I came back to a flat battery on the GS, I jump started it and now have no radio cd ariel or air con or heater, any ideas on a fuse anywhere ? I have looked around and can't find any gone, maybe you lot can help Also a nice kind rodent made a bed in the engine bay, after clearing the nest it seems I am missing a vacuum hose from the vacuum resevoir, I have a length of hose but for the life of me I can't find where the other end goes, OK I know I have the manual, but it doesn't show where it runs to after that *** knows what a rodent wants with a vacuum hose but I guess they can have hobbies as well P.S. if anyone still wants a pdf copy of the GS300 manual please feel free to email me
  8. Nice work Now please nip off and find some nice covers for the Mk 1 GS300 and you will have at least one more sale to me that is, I think that would look brilliant when i look under my bonnet
  9. Go the classic route, then you can have your cake and eat it with the cash your wanting to pocket from the 911 and still have something with some performance and street credibility get an older Lotus or a Cosworth Both of these if you get a good one will never depreciate unless you blow it up or smash it into a wall A friend has a Lotus Esprit (an early one) and we have a cosworth and both are worth more now that when we bought them, and I reckon they are going up in value more a year than the pittyfull interest rates you can get these days, so you will win again And if it is street cred your after (911 driver poseur alert) I bet if you turn up in one of those you will get more admiring glances than ever before in your 911
  10. You are welcome chaps Now I know about www.megaupload.com I can send some of my mega files which is cool as well Ian
  11. Or you could have the same sort of good luck as a friend of mine They always do the same 6 numbers without fail His wife came rushing in one Saturday shouting we won ,, we got 5 plus the bonus ball,,, yippeeeeeeeee He was jumping up and down with her celebrating and pulled the ticket out of his pocket waving it around like an idiot She was stod looking at him strangely He stopped jumping and asked what was up She said how did you get the ticket it is in the front room on the table Both of them bought a ticket with the same usual numbers on the way home as they thought it was their turn Double whammy and they made a mint
  12. It looks good to me, rather refreshing that it hasn't tried to hard to be that different or it would be slipping into the BM and Merc trap I do think this will appeal to the Lexus driver who really wants the performance And therefore the question in how it will sell is Will this car make you feel like your in a Lexus, or are you in a BMW Merc clone If its a Lexus it will sell loads, if it makes you feel your in a Jap M5 then it fails
  13. when I got my GS it was parked for 1 night and some d*ck*ead did the same to me oh do I wish I knew who it was :tsktsk: I used some of this stuff http://www.toys4cars.co.uk/index.php?main_...fa90755c701d578 It took 75% of the key right out, really good stuff and reasonable price as well only a word of caution, dont use the mega light emery paper to much it cuts a lot quicker than you think and can go through to the base colour
  14. thats a hard one I love the Mk 1 looks but sensible tells me that I should go and get the newer model,,,,, but then I see my Mk 1 and prefer it again depends on if you wanna be seen in it or see others from the inside But there again I always seem to prefer the older shape on a lot of cars Wasnt the SD1 Rover miles nicer than anything they have produced since And didn't the early TVR look better than the new ones And wasn't the E type Jag beautiful compared to the latest models And wasn't the DB5 better than the DB7 P.S. Santa if you read this any of the above please,,,I will be good next year,,,, promise
  15. Looks a cool car Just out of interest with 900 bhp did it last longer than 2.6 seconds ?
  16. I have come up through engineering the old fashioned way I did a 5 year apprenticeship From there I have got 2 degrees and can call myself a doctor I have been on so many courses with RAF and NATO and civi street I can't count them all I have so many damn certificates I could paper my walls with them But in my opinion the only one that actually means I can do the job is the old style apprenticeship, with old style learning I am qualified to assess NVQ to level 5, assess the assessors and double check the assessors assessors, and I can honestly say that compared to a real apprenticeship, any NVQ is a very poor comparison NVQ in the lecturing trade is known as "not very qualified" I know a lot of people have had no choice with what is available and they have done their best to get their achievements, but just think of what they could have achieved with a real opportunity to learn from people who were best suited to teach them I left lecturing for 1 reason, I got so frustrated at having to achieve a balance sheet, and shift bodies through the system to meet "targets of achievement" knowing that under the NVQ modern apprenticeship route, only a very very small percentage of those that passed had a chance of realising their potential, this is so unfair to their employers and unfair to the lecturers, but most of all to those with some gift that wanted to learn and we werent allowed to teach them as we wanted I am reminded of a sign in the lecturers rest room a year ago I couldn't even spell enjineir Now I is one It is such a waste of our youths skills that we cannot return to the old days
  17. Driving along fine reverse parked fine went to drive off, no power steering :tsktsk: resevoir is full of fluid, no leaks, no nasty noises, belts all in position, anyone got any clues on this one, is there a cut out, a fuse anywhere?
  18. Call that a secret ? go on type Area 51 into search and see if u can spot any flying saucers You know you want to
  19. I don't buy new cars, I think that you lose far to much money with it sitting on the drive so I buy nice second hand ones, like most people I guess The one thing that turned me towards Lexus wasn't the new cars, it was the condition of the older ones, even ones that were described as rough were really in good nick compared to others Yes beemers, mercs audi are nice cars new, there is no doubt about that But look at them after they have done 130,000 miles No contest the Lexus wins hands down I would have no problem putting 95% of Lexus cars I have seen in a line, cover the number plates and mileage up and let anyone have a guess what age and mileage they are I do honestly think that anyone who doesnt know a lexus would be many years and thousands of miles out in their guess That is a true sign of quality
  20. I found a long time ago that it is not the cost of parts that matters, it is how often you need them I have had many many cars over the years and was quite shocked at what Lexus wanted for their bits and pieces, but a bit of shopping around can save a fortune But as they said, if Lexus relied on sales of spare parts to make a profit we would have gone bust and closed ages ago as they dont sell that many If you want a big prestige car then none of them will give you dirt cheap motoring, if you want that get a Punto (surprisingly daughters X reg Punto for sale a bargain @ £1,200 ono) Oil costs the same whether you put it in a beemer or a Lexus, just avoid high labour costs to get it there, any competent garage can do normal servicing to a car, when it is a specialised job then only the best garages will have the right equipment to make the job easy Have you driven the LS ?
  21. If you take the battery to any competent vehicle electics garage or shop they will test the battery with a load tester basically this is a 2 ended tool that places a resistance load across the battery, then they take a voltage and or a specific gravity test of the acid, and the battery either passes or fails Just because something is new it doesnt mean it works On a quick point have you cleaned the terminals of the battery ? many batteries have a clear protective film or coating on the terminals for storage and unless removed can give the symptons you experience
  22. If your gearbox is very jerky or kicks on engaging,,, i.e. neutral into drive or reverse or your very jerky on the change adjust your throttle position sensor anti clockwise a fraction and try again I had this problem after the rebuild of my head, as I had all the throttle body etc off and cleaned it all up I called in at Lexus and a very kind Lexus techie told me this, I adjusted it back a fraction twice (simple 2 screws but I did have to remove the front plasic engine cover to get to the bottom screw and amazingly the take up was smooth and seemless and it all went back to normal, including tickover and kickdown Apparently the throttle sensor controls part of the gearbox somewhere in the electronics He said that last week someone came in with the same problem and had taken it somewhere else and was told it was a new gearbox and £2,500, he fixed it for a tenner for the bloke Now I haven't a clue how or why this adjustment works but it has on my GS
  23. I put my GS300 against my mates beemer 535, his was newer by 4 years and less mileage We swapped cars and had a drive in each, his definately had better acceleration as his was a manual, but the ride was yuck and the comfort and smoothness was no contest against the Lexus He didn't want his beemer back afterwards I reckon if I had a 400 he would have locked himself in and refused to come out
  24. Since I changed the head gasket, guess what, the vibration has dissapeared Strange things happening inside the engine I reckon it at a certain revs the engine went into a vibration mode, and started shuddering itself by causing a harmonic resonance in the car Since the head gasket all has been well, I haven't had a problem, I have even tried to cause the vibration by holding at a speed where it was before and thankfully nothing happens It is really nice having a car that actually runs as it should for a change
  25. Looks good to me apart from the horns look a bit wrong more like some 2 little things ( . ) ( . ) poking out of a almost see through blouse nice but not quite right when u want some class
