Just a word of warning, on Sunday 16th Dec, Virgin Trains will be running a rather extended journey of about 3½ hours Manchester-Euston, diverted via the back streets of Birmingham due to engineering works on the direct route. Remember that it’s better to travel hopefully than to arrive………!!

My car’s now done 10,650 from new. The tyres are Yokohama A041s and they are showing significant signs of being knackered, with some down below 3mm tread depth. The wear’s pretty even across the tyres – I had the good doctor check and reset the geometry for me at 4000 miles. So, 12,000 miles as a prediction for these tyres isn’t very good and the car’s not had that hard a life. What tyres do I go for next, for a reasonable compromise between life, grip and noise? Dunlop SP9000 seem popular, but I’d be interested in others’ views. Edit (30 Jan 2008): at 12900 miles, the rears are almost down to the wear bars, and the fronts won’t be far behind, so I have ordered 4 new tyres: Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s, based on the recommendations of various folks on the site. A set of 4 (to be fitted on Saturday) was £350 through black circles.

You’re right, the Lexus dealer experience is much better than any of the others – especially the German brands starting with “A” or “B”. The IS300 is a very good car – after 6 months of ownership, mine just keeps getting better and better. Welcome aboard.

Me too! In all my time driving, I have been involved in one accident - when I was stationary at traffic lights with the handbrake on when someone ran into the back of me. I’ve parted company with my bike twice – both my fault and, dare I say it, both because I was travelling too fast for my own level of incompetence! Take care out there, but do enjoy yourself.

Earlier on this afternoon, I was coming out of Manchester on the M56, heading for the M6 southbound. As I approached junction 7, the sat nav told me to “bear left towards Norwich”. That made me pay attention! Of course, what the nice lady should have said was “Northwich”. Does the system have any other prize winning errors?

I know mine’s the old model, but Brink seems to be the only firm making them to find any Lexus. I think that Brink make the Lexus branded ones too. Anyway, I’ve got a Brink removable one on my IS300. It looks, fits and works fine.

I like “pay at the pump”, it saves having to interact with the morons behind the cash desk! (Sorry, I’m starting to rant too)
