  1. Missed out on B16 GBN a few years ago, now quite and expensive plate, sure it was only a few hundred when is withered too long....NB, gbn is my initials and I am a 20st plus weightlifter/philosopher/martial artist/poet....delete as appropriate haha...BIG GBN on my car, with a bit of imagination, would have been nice....particularly when I drove the smart cars!...
  2. ...I looked at the website listed and as I understand, the problem isn't actually the diameter, which is actually not that different to the 16s when one takes into account the profile of tyre, it's the fact they might stick out ....what I want to avoid is having to roll my arches or any other body mod as the cars bodywork is fantastic, and why mess with perfection!!...as some of you have said, best to try them and see for myself....won't be till end if month anyway, keep you posted...
  3. I am not hundred per cent either way on this, but I did promise myself if I kept the car, I would spend the money I save on fuel,,as it won't be used so much, on making it MY ls400...will keep you guys posted on decision and post up some pics...either way!...thanks for all the advice this far, guess it's a case of suck it and see..

    Hi All..

I have never driven an is200 but intend to...nice car...
  5. Yes I write a lot of stuff...was just how I was feeling that day...
  6. Thanks for that man, looks like they will sit nearer to strut and stick out more...dunno how much more though....the 16s ride great but these were current in mid nineties...almost twenty years ago...I may decide to improve, to my eyes, the looks of the car...not looking to improve ride, grip,or anything, just the cosmetics....my 16s are mint and could,go back on at anytime...the wheels am looking at may he a step to far in this regard, they just appealed because they are reconditioned and have tyres on already so package deal... and they look fantastic in glossy black, which I think would set off my cars Arab racing gold paint lovely...
  7. ...by someone who knows what they are talking about....I have my eyes on a set of 19in black alloys for my ls400... The centre bore for these wheels is 74, whereas the ls standard is 60.1...I can get what is known as 'spigot rings' to make this difference up...correct?.... Also, the offset on these are 20-25 front and rear....they are deep dish....standard offset is 50....how do I address this...does it have to be addressed....they are significantly bigger and wider than standard wheels but have the same pcd and came of a lexus....would I need any furthers adaptors etc.... I have no idea of they will fit without rubbing but I can try before buying....any advice greatly appreciated....except advice that says don't on lexus aesthetic principals....advice saying don't on safety principals WILL be list ended too obviously.... My knowledge of wheel fitting etc is limited so any help etc is appreciated....I hear the big problem is clearing the front brakes at all?...gbn
  8. Owned four smarts now, including a rare brabus...huge fun, wonderful to own, will I have another....? Most probably yes...the older cars came from development in the ninties and as such are, I would say, slightly better than most older superminis wit their tridion integrated roll cage...one can't test for every eventuality and perhaps pictures in your first picture was an unusual smash, or worse luck scenarios....I have never felt unsafe driving any of my four tens of thousands of miles across the country. Best advice for safety in accidents....pay attention and avoid them!
  9. I am a bit of a tree hugger by nature...yet I have owned almost 200 cars , many of which were big engined or high performance...I think this is where quality of life etc...needs to balance environmental concern....yes, if I was seriously serious, I wouldn't have a car...or I would drive an old cinquecento or the like..(of which I have owned several...smart cars, the lot)... Yes, I CHOOSE to drive a sub 30 mpg car...but I drove it responsibly and by keeping an old car on the road, I contribute less to damaging the environment than if I bought a new Prius every three years. The real damage to the environment is caused from cradle to grave, with the most being done in the mining of raw minerals, assembly etc...I have never owned a new car, never will...for this very reason....four of us going to Edinburgh or Glasgow or the like from dundee is still cheaper than four train tickets return....not an environmental cost given, but if public transport was easier to use and cheaper, I would....but why would we when we can sit in air con splendour, in a car that cost peanuts, has done most of the damage to the planet it will do before it turned a wheel, and is so beautifully made it could run, and run, and run, thus negating the need for my myself or any of its subsequent owners the need to contribute to this needless supply created by manufactured demand that seems prevelant in the west Incidentally, just watched al gore's an inconvenient truth and have never seen global warming discussed in a calmer, more rational, more terrifying manner...very worth a watch...an honest American politician?....I wonder how the world would have changed if he had beaten bush in 2000.... He introduces himself by saying, hi, I used to be known as the next president of America..... If you have interest in these issue I implore you to watch this...no knee jerk stuff, very little schmaltzi Americanism, just easily understood analogy, well delivered speech....fascinating...
  10. Mate had an lpg Audi a8 which eventually suffered from valve damage, I think due to the dry, non lubricant effect of gas?..he was told one should cycle two tanks lpg to one of petrol to negate this....?....I have no knowledge of lpg, just regurgitating old advice..
  11. I have set itl in my head that the only replacement for my ls will be an sc...start saving....is it wrong that I really like the Corinthian brown/copper colour
  12. What a story...enjoy, my ls is rarely above 2500 rpm, but boy is it nice to know it's there when you need it..
  13. I love Jags and Reality is it's very jag like as in you know the nigh on 290hp is there but you just waft...and it's an absolute pleasure to drive...it has what I call a tactility to its build integrity...you can feel it's been superbly built and the feeling of driving a car that was designed, engineered and built to be the best is, nice.... The wafty drive I suppose helps the mpg which for a big, heavy car has been great...never less than 20 mpg, 22-24 mpg with town driving only...24-28 mpg when it's over a mixed week and about 35 mpg on long runs with cruise on...and air con...and stereo....pretty remarkable, for a 20 year old v8...and I have never owned a car with more space behind the wheel..no wonder the yanks loved them...I have a car that cost £46k in 1996, would cost over £90k to replace from today's lexus range..(top of range is 600 now), cost £1300 all in and is not in significantly worse condition from new, with a matching driving experience....what was I thinkng about wanting to sell it...I think next will be the similarly under appreciated ugly bug sc430....a grand tourer to OWN and enjoy...not a testers favourite either, but I bet they are fantastic day to day... I am, clearly, converted to the lexus way....
  14. Stunning...iv not seen the sc around...I'm in dundee and the only lexus I regularly see are another gold ls400, a gold ls430 like yours and sometimes a green ls400 at tesco...I'm only counting the 'big ones'....plenty smaller lexus around...
  15. I once took a disassembled garden shed home from my dads in Kilmarnock to dundee on the roof rack attached to a rather glorious old series 3 jaguar 4.2 sovereign ....we got some funny looks and it did very strange things to the cars centre of gravity , roundabouts were, erm, interesting...
  16. Yup, what I thought....that's exactly what I do...fuel isn't an issue anyway so not fussed about lpg full price conversion, if I out the tank and bits on ebay I might raise a tank of fuel!,,il give it a go.... I have a guy who was an lpg fitter who says he will ' give it a go' but that phrase does not fill me with confidence....when my daughter and mrs took first drive in my ls, they commented, wow, this must be what it's like having a new car...!! I don't want to risk anything spoiling it's driveahility
  17. My car came with a doughnut tank fitted, all the wiring, pipe work etc done up to the engine and a box of bits to complete including ecu, injectors etc...how/where could I get this job completed....lpg centres don't wanna know as they need to have done all the work to certify, and an lpg 'homer' seems unlikely...it's a romano system as far as I know....would make my decision to keep the car even more sensible if I could get it converted....but am not paying 2k for a full conversion on a car that didn't even cost that...
  18. Just pulled out its history and mot's etc....full lexus history up till 40k, then another three services at an indie up here taking it up to 58k miles, last service less than a year and 9000 miles ago, present miles 67k and counting....where would I fond another like this?...no advisories on mots etc...and it's a joy to drive...
  19. ...had decided to sell my ls before returning to university in September....had car advertised for a few weeks, few enquiries but yesterday was driving with mrs and it hit me...what am I doing....I will never own a better car than this. I have owned almost 200 cars and always want to change but, why?...for the miles I do and the way I drive and my physical size and shape, the ls is the one for me...so, I took it off gumtree etc...and cancelled viewings. Ok, it won't get used much during term time...but so what?...it's not going to fall to pieces, it's almost 20 years old and has no discernible wear....so, time for some wheels and a nice tint I think haha
  20. When I insured my car I gave it a value of 2k....aviva tried to tell me it was worth £400...three owner, 67k mile ls400.....and charge me £731 for the privilege.....
  21. This is what our cars are made for....I have not managed such an epic trip but my first journey after two days of ownership was an almost 700 mile round trip and I just had NO DOUBT the old car would make it..I sat at 2000 rpm with cruise on in blazing heat, air con on, and the temperature gauge etc sat rock steady...averaged just under 34mpg....I would drive my ls ANYWHERE
