  1. Both for meKen, this time between 40 and 30mph with no problems at higher speed (unlike previously). That said, coming back from site today on a stretch of motorway I could see the wheel wobbling at 60mph plus, which was new! In fact it was so noticeable at one stage I thought I must have a tyre going down. Then driving home this evening, that high speed vibration was gone again, so I might put that down to road surface (unlikely) or the offside caliper sticking again. I'm inclined to think that is It is indeed this as when I manoeuvre into reverse I get the familiar clunk from the pads. I can't wait to have the new caliper fitted next week!
  2. I put four Dunlop Sport Maxx RT on my IS300 in May 2014 and they've done just over 21,000 miles since then. They have gone down from 7.0mm when new to about 3.5mm now. I should say I haven't run them over those two included winters (switching to Avon Ice Tourings then) and I swapped front for rears at the last change. That has helped even the wear. I bought them really because they were a good price with low db rating (they can be misleading, I know) and are reasonably on fuel. Like you, I do mostly motorways, or fast A-roads so our use is probably similar. Never had any trouble wanting for cornering on fast A-roads when being - ahem - enthusiastic, but a lack of traction in cooler, damper conditions is evident as soon as I switch to the Ice Tourings. For my size (215/45R17s, I think your rears are larger?) I think you can only get them in XL. They don't have much left in them now, so when the time comes to go back to summer tyres, I'll run them for a month then get a new set.
  3. Well, I'm glad you got sorted with a car in the end, even if it's the wrong make! Hope it works out. Looking forward to reading about your experiences Lukas; I had that GS on my radar for a while, as a sort 'what if?' purchase.
  4. John, it's been a month so I don't know if you are still in the market, but I see this GS450h now listed at Lexus Exeter.
  5. Cheers chap, I might just get one. Even though I'm meant to saving-up a bit this month!
  6. I'd toyed with the idea of getting one of those after reading a few things abut 'the wobble'. Them seem a lot cheaper than I'd expected, so the cynic in me thinks they must be worthless. But perhaps I'll look again, which one did you buy?
  7. Good girl! I know I'm alone in my household in appreciating the six cylinder sound. I never tire of it. It's such a shock when I drive four pots for work, sometimes they are even, diesels... shudder. My daughter (considerably older than yours) likes to sit in the front because she likes the heated seat, but my son complains he can't fit his massive feet under the front seats if he sits in the back. Kids!
  8. Red wasn't my first choice either (despite my affiliations) but it's nice to drive something that you can find in the car park. And when it's clean, it look quality.
  9. Red Lexus IS? It'll never catch on! FSH and 70k is good for a 51 plate, but I'm guessing from the painted calipers and wheels, the last owner wasn't the archetypal little old lady?
  10. Another victim here, so I am following this thread with interest! My IS300 is on her third set of front discs (OEM ones last time) in my ownership. Before Christmas, following a lot of reading here an eleswhere, I had the discs skimmed on the car (Pro-cut lathe) in an attempt to solve high speed wobble. Unfortunately, in removing the nearside caliper the lower pin sheared, so the caliper was replaced. When everything was reassembled, the offside caliper was 'sticky' and had to be run out and back again before it would operate properly. So, the old girl is booked in to have the offside caliper replaced in the next couple of weeks . And yes, following the skim all was good for about 1,000 miles, but the wobble came back, this time at a much lower speed. So, I can live with it as it is - certainly more than the high speed wobble - but I want to get it sorted for good.Once the new caliper is fitted I'm going to give a few weeks the look at getting the hubs done, if my mechanic reckons the run-out is indeed excessive. But to be clear, when you lads talk of hubs, how much of it are we looking at? Just the axle hub or replacing as far back (and including) the bearing at the same time?
  11. That's excellent Dave, and it was good of you to spend so much time on your post. Hope you are soon behind the wheel of whichever spec you go for. And you'll notice there were no lectures on this forum about driver training...
  12. I guess if we don't hear back, we can assume it didn't float his boat! Very difficult on a test drive to really get a grasp of a car, I find. I must admit, the first time I drove an IS300h I was almost disorientated, it was so different to anything I'd driven before. But the second time - when I knew what to expect - I began to appreciate it for what it was. Won't ever be everyone's cup of tea.
  13. Not a scientific survey, but there are something like ten times as many Audi on Autotrader as there are Lexus (but in the interest of fairness, this evening there are more IS300h than A3 saloons!). I hope you enjoy the test drive and they afford you enough time to get into the unique 'rhythm' of a hybrid.
  14. Have you eliminated the Audi from your search now Dave, just the BMW and Lexus in it? What was the reasoning there?
  15. By coincidence, this evening I read something on the HJ website regarding the MX5: "6-speed box of 2009 upgrade can transmit 'chattering' noises to the cabin due to a lighter flywheel having been fitted to make the car more responsive. There is a modification to new boxes which improves but does not cure the problem." As Steve said, perhaps your problem is similarly down to the lightened flywheel?
  16. It's a very serious business! I'm very much the same. But you've come to the right place asking here, lots of knowledge here.
  17. I assume Dave, you are the same daveC748 currently with 43 replies to your post on the Honest John form? I commented there, so won't repeat myself...
  18. I would have thought if they went to the trouble of changing the water pump, the belt would probably been done at the same time. Why wait until just 7k and one year later to do it? Hopefully someone can confirm about your belt marking. If it was done by Lexus, there should be a silver sticky label somewhere under the bonnet. Looks a beauty by the way. I love the look of those very late model ISs.
  19. The corrosion I've read about - and which my IS had - is at the rear end of the sill by the rear wheelarch. There was an earlier thread here: Sill corrosion If Lexus suspect damage from jacking, that implies it's elsewhere on the sill. Is the Lexus anti-corrosion warranty 12 years then? That would be quite something if they pay to repair it, but that's perhaps that's why they mention incorrect jacking!
  20. Good luck in your search, Ian. As I type, there are 124 IS200s and 7 IS300s listed on Autotrader; one must have your name on it!
  21. I've never owned a car that delighted Autocar, What Car? or any other of those dreadful rags; my history has Austin, Morris, Fiat and Nissan in the ranks. I don't ever see myself in an Audi or VW, just not me. An old Lexus suits me just fine.
  22. Today I have repaired a flapping undertray, thanks to some body clips and cable ties. Oh, and my new ramp extensions! Broke it in last weekend's heavy weather; shows how much force water can generate under your car at speed.
  23. Over 49k, my IS300 (sold only as automatics in the UK) has averaged 30.8mpg. That's with a mix generally of 80% motorway and 20% urban.
  24. I've no practical experience, but in researching GS450h as a possible replacement for my old IS, I have read on some American sites that there are reported problems with the electric power steering system. Might be worth bit of investigating.
  25. Well that's a shame, John. Hopefully something will turn-up soon, you never know.
