  1. If you discount the EGR, DPF issues that almost all modern diesels suffer from, then it is quite on par with other brands in terms of reliability. Probably even better than most. Yes, it had an issue with head gaskets that has been mostly resolved now, but then again, a lot of other manufacturers have design flaws too. Also, the 220d is not sluggish. Well, perhaps compared to a Ferrari it is, but not when considered against anything comparable.
  2. Sounds ideal for what you are doing. Mine is also an earlier 177hp one, but it has been great. I managed 41mpg for my last tank, but that was with more town driving then usual. The head gasket problem shouldn't be an issue, and I was told they drive a bit better because of reduced turbo lag. EGR's and DPF's won't cause any grief since you are doing lots of motorway miles. Similarly, on the motorway, the car is quiet and the mid range torque makes overtaking very easy. Combine that with good fuel economy, and it will be a very good mile muncher
  3. Hmm, I wonder why he is selling it after spending so much on it? Also, does this mean that the newer lights are a direct swap for the pre facelift cars?
  4. Exactly. Can't imagine having to reach over the change the temp settings. Maybe he should have gone for a smaller screen and left the rest as it original was. Sounds a bit like a work in progress car, but he has obviously spent some money on it. It is 2007 according to the advert, so it appear he retrofitted the later lights. Also, if it is in good condition, then he is not asking huge money for it considering it has 70,000 miles. One thing though; if it was me, that rear spoiler would have to go.
  5. Pity there wasn't more pictures. Not sure about having the heater controls in the glove compartment, as it seems rather inconvenient. Did he say what other mods it had by any chance?
  6. For what's it worth, this is what mine looked like when I changed it:
  7. Hope you don't mind me chiming in Just wanted to say that I also agree the extended warranty is worth getting. On mine, 2 months after purchasing it, my car needed a new flywheel. Lexus Edgware Road took care of it, no fuss. As such, the warranty has now paid for itself, and I still have peace of mind for some time to come.
  8. You're right, I hadn't noticed that the exhaust is on the wrong side for a diesel. How strange. I see you already asked him about the heater controls
  9. Not a fan of the look to be honest. I am wondering though; how does he operate the climate control with that screen?
  10. He is not getting confused. Did you read his post properly? He is saying that, by your rational, the IS300h is better than the IS250 because it is probably faster around a track. As for driver involvement, you seem to think that having a manual box changes everything? Did you not read the article you linked? And I quote: "but the drive is still damn decent, with direct steering via a great-to-hold wheel, a tight front-end (helped by double wishbones, one up on the 320d’s struts) and a chassis that shines despite the batteries in the boot." Also: "Essentially, we can’t praise the IS highly enough. The fact is its shortcomings stand out because the rest of the package is so sorted. The first-generation Lexus IS was brave, the second was bland, the third is almost brilliant. " Not that I am putting down my own second gen IS, but I accept what it is.
  11. The IS250 has a normal auto gearbox. The newer 3rd generation IS300h hybrid has a CVT box. That discussion has nothing to do with your quest for a new car
  12. More judgement? You mention TG, but link Car Magazine? Anyway, have to to agree with Rayaans on this one. I take it you haven't tried the Lexus CVT? I was lent a CT for a week by my local dealer, so had a good go with it. I admit it is a little strange, but as Rayaans points out, the difference between it and a auto box isn't that massive. Don't you want a Mercedes V8 next? That would be an auto then. Larger, big engine cars are generally suited to having auto boxes. I think the IS300h qualifies on this count, so I don't think a manual would work very well. You're mention of top speed and 0-60 times are beside the point as well since Rayaans specifically mentions mid range. He is also right in that this mimics real word condition more accurately than 0-60 times.
  13. Yes, it is a dual mass, which is why ideally it should be replaced at the same time. In this case though, since the car has so few miles on it, they probably didn't replace it. I am just curious if they checked it or not.
  14. Damn, 48 days? That is madness. Still, it sounds like Lexus Coventry did well fighting it on your behalf. Ridiculous blaming racing as a cause on a diesel Lexus! Not exactly a boy racers car. You say the replaced the clutch, but did they also replace the flywheel at the same time? Also, how does the new gearbox now feel? Glad you got it sorted in the end.
  15. Sounds interesting. Do you have any pictures?
  16. I agree that it should throw up an error, but at this point I am clutching at straws. If you are handy with a multi meter, you can always test the resistance.
  17. So it only happens when it is cold? Did Lexus check the coolant sensor? Also, when it is cold and the switch on the air con, does the idle rise to 1200rpm?
  18. Well, I can't be sure, but from the look of the pictures, the gap is bigger on the left hand side as opposed to the right. This could be simply a case of a slight adjustment needed, but you need to have a good look to make sure it hasn't had a knock on the rear. As for the history, that is up to you. Personally, I wouldn't be happy with it, but for others, as long as it runs well and the oil in it isn't very dirty, they might be ok with it. What it comes down to is whether any of these issues are a deal breaker for you? No point continuing if you are not happy.
  19. Hello. A couple of things stand out. Ahmedali44 is right in saying that unless you guys have different specs, it is a strange one. I am no expert, but it looks like SE-L spec, but they only came with leather? Next, have a good look around the rear cause the panel gap on the left of the boot lid looks a little off. Lastly, the service history is quite patchy. Am I right in reading that it didn't have a service between 49 and 81k? That is over 18,000 miles, which isn't great. Also, it hasn't had a service for over 2 and a half years? Getting another key wouldn't be hassle, but unless you know someone with the appropriate software, it is a dealer only job, which means it isn't cheap.
  20. This is very strange. I know it is probably of no help, but this is what the manual says about fault code P0093 I would assume the Lexus guys would have run through these tests though, so this is probably redundant. Very curious to know what exactly is wrong with the car.
  21. Man that sucks Gary. Hopefully the dealer will be able to find the fault this time. At least it sounds like they are trying. To answer your question, I do a mix of town and motorway driving and am currently averaging 38mpg. Around town I get in the mid to high 20's, but then that is in London. On the motorway, I tend to poodle at around 60mph, which helps the mpg somewhat. When I do that, the car reckons my average mpg is around the high 40's to low 50's. Overall, the best I have managed for a tank so far is just over 40mpg.
  22. Well, despite the lack of responses, i'm sure many of us are finding this thread interesting, so thanks for the updates. I find 65mph in 4th to be too short, so I use 5th instead, which the car seems much happier with. Did you try resetting the average fuel consumption figure while on the motorway? I find doing that while going a constant 60mph in 5th gives some pleasant readings. Perhaps it would be a good idea to reset the cars ECU by disconnecting the battery for a while?
  23. This one seems rather nice: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201602070812761?searchcontext=default&postcode=OX10 6RR&model=is_250&page=1&make=lexus&onesearchad=used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew&search-target=usedcars&sort=pricedesc&transmission=automatic&price-to=7500&radius=1500&logcode=p I know it is a bit above your budget, but a little haggling should bring it down a bit. Also sold by a dealer. Top spec and low mileage: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201601300563057?searchcontext=default&postcode=OX10 6RR&model=is_250&page=1&make=lexus&onesearchad=used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew&search-target=usedcars&sort=pricedesc&transmission=automatic&price-to=7500&radius=1500&logcode=p High mileage but within price range and a facelift car: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201601260422959?searchcontext=default&postcode=OX10 6RR&model=is_250&page=1&make=lexus&onesearchad=used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew&search-target=usedcars&sort=pricedesc&transmission=automatic&price-to=7500&radius=1500&logcode=p
