  1. https://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/2017/jul/10/100-fossil-fuel-companies-investors-responsible-71-global-emissions-cdp-study-climate-change Limiting fossil fuel usage would cripple a lot of those big polluters, but not buying stuff from China will make the biggest difference.
  2. Someone isn't keeping up to date.. https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/nuclear-fuel-cycle/nuclear-wastes/radioactive-wastes-myths-and-realities.aspx
  3. The LFA isn't ULEZ compliant, so therefore inferior to my RC.
  4. The same way an Audi A3 differentiates itself from a VW Golf, a Skoda Fabia and a Seat Ibiza. Same car, same drivetrain but different badge and marketing. Brands become more about lifestyle and historical perceived differences.
  5. Got a bit US centric. Meant PLC: https://www.unbiased.co.uk/life/small-business/limited-liability
  6. Modern society is subcontractors all the way along. In the end it's one chap in an overall fixing things, while another in a suit and tie frantically sorts out the paperwork while being 12 different PLCs at the same time. Both on zero hours contracts.
  7. The battery may have been charged, but if it has expired won't hold any of the charge. Do you have a multimeter to check the voltage?
  8. The plus point of BEV is that it's easier to change power plants - we as a country just need to invest in some good nuclear plants.
  9. I bought my RC300h as the charging infrastructure for BEVs simply isn't there yet enough IMO, especially if you live in a house where you don't have a charger at home. Particularly if you are renting. I would have liked the powertrain to have a slightly bigger battery and feature plug in charging, but none of the PHEVs were of interest to me. The hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is even more haphazard, at least with BEV you can slowly charge almost anywhere, given a long enough extension lead. If you run out with a hydrogen fuel cell, you are more stuck. There's only 3 stations in the whole of Scotland, so unless you live around Aberdeen or in the Orkneys, you're stuck. The "hydrogen economy" is potentially quite exciting but it's really hard to see how we (as in the entire country) would get to the point where it would be enough. Toyota have been pushing more at the hydrogen door than the EV door, even though they pioneered hybrids with the Prius. We are living in "interesting times", there are a number of transitions happening. The momentum with BEVs is there in a way that it is not with hydrogen. I hope to be surprised and see more hydrogen stations around, but even the map with the planned stations isn't particular exciting.
  10. There's some hills here. I'll let you know when the London traffic eases so I can actually get up to above walking pace.
  11. Man: Is this the right thread for an argument? Other Man: I've told you once. Man: No you haven't! Other Man: Yes I have. M: When? O: Just now. M: No you didn't! O: Yes I did! M: You didn't! O: I did! M: You didn't! O: I'm telling you, I did! M: You did not! O: Oh I'm sorry, is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? M: Ah! (taking out his wallet and paying) Just the five minutes. O: Just the five minutes. Thank you. O: Anyway, I did. M: You most certainly did not! O: Now let's get one thing quite clear: I most definitely told you! M: Oh no you didn't! O: Oh yes I did! M: Oh no you didn't! O: Oh yes I did! M: Oh no you didn't! O: Oh yes I did! M: Oh no you didn't! O: Oh yes I did! M: Oh no you didn't! O: Oh yes I did! M: Oh no you didn't! O: Oh yes I did! M: No you DIDN'T! O: Oh yes I did! M: No you DIDN'T! O: Oh yes I did! M: No you DIDN'T! O: Oh yes I did! M: Oh look, this isn't an argument! (pause) O: Yes it is! M: No it isn't! (pause) M: It's just contradiction! O: No it isn't! M: It IS! O: It is NOT! M: You just contradicted me! O: No I didn't! M: You DID! O: No no no! M: You did just then! O: Nonsense! M: (exasperated) Oh, this is futile!! (pause) O: No it isn't! M: Yes it is! (pause) M: I came here for a good argument! O: AH, no you didn't, you came here for an argument! M: An argument isn't just contradiction. O: Well! it CAN be! M: No it can't! M: An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition. O: No it isn't! M: Yes it is! 'tisn't just contradiction. O: Look, if I *argue* with you, I must take up a contrary position! M: Yes but it isn't just saying 'no it isn't'. O: Yes it is! M: No it isn't! O: Yes it is! M: No it isn't! O: Yes it is! M: No it ISN'T! Argument is an intellectual process. Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says. O: It is NOT! M: It is! O: Not at all! M: It is! (The Arguer hits a bell on his desk and stops.) O: Thank you, that's it.
  12. I'd love to see Lexus put this 300e drive train into a RC/LC coupe type body.
  13. Looks like a sweet ride. Maybe you can rent out the back seats and start your own little massage parlour. 💆‍♂️ On a tangent, purple wheelie bins?
  14. Opinions are like bumholes. Everyone's got one, and quite a lot of the time they're full of 💩.
  15. My preference for my own cars are: Goodyear Eagle F1 Uniroyal Rainsport Vredestein Ultrac For my partner's car I usually go for something all season, or winter tyre: Vredestein Wintrac/Snowtrac Continental AllSeason Michelin CrossClimate For my bicycle I prefer to use Vittoria tyres. The ADAC (German AA) has some very good and thorough testing that they publish every year. Though in German, obviously. The results can be found in English too: https://www.oponeo.co.uk/blog/adac-summer-tyre-test
  16. When I had some "approved repairer" repair a car after an incident many years ago, they did a terrible job with the cheapest possible parts. You have to live with it, it's your vehicle, so don't accept a subpar job.
  17. How can one have a silent exit when you have to shout "ENGAGE, AHEAD WARP FACTOR 1" at the top of your voice?!
  18. The fewer people use petrol/diesel, the more expensive it will be, as there's huge costs associated with running refineries and the general distribution infrastructure. But there will be some extended periods of ups and downs of prices as the oil extraction adjusts. But it will trend upwards. Emissions will become even more harshly taxed. ULEZ zones will become larger and larger until they envelop the entire country. You can already see some of the oil companies repositioning themselves as energy companies as a matter of pure survival.
  19. The careful part is more important for putting it back in rather than for popping it off.
  20. Petrol and diesel will become more and more expensive. See it more as horses than cars. Horses still exist but few have them, they're ruinously expensive to maintain a thoroughbred and you have to be a little bit crazy to keep one. Almost all petrol/diesel only cars aside from some super high end ones will become worthless.
  21. As far as I understand it the hybrid batteries in these are too small to offer any meaningful EV only distance. They're only Nickel batteries and (relatively) small to keep weight down. I'd see the "EV mode" button as a slight gimmick, nothing more.
  22. Thanks peeps. Quite happy enough with the audio performance of the standard music system. Last two weekends have featured some torrential outpoors and not super happy with the wiper performance of the ones that came with the car, so swapped them for some Bosch Aero wipers. Also waiting for the SatNav map update to download from SatNaviShop. As well as waiting for a local valet company to have a slot for a nice wax.
  23. While a contract is a contract is a contract, when it comes to law there are still reasonable defences. In UK law there is the concept of the a reasonable person, reasonable man, or the man on the Clapham omnibus. Will a "reasonable person" consider changing wipers as a modification? Probably no. Will a reasonable man consider using run flat tyres compared to non run flat a modification? Probably not. In fact a reasonable person would think you're a fool for going to a dealership to purchase OEM wipers when you could just pop to Halfords. A reasonably person would go to their local tyre shop and ask for some new rubbers on the wheels. There's also the fact that a contract may not override legal protections you have. For instance, you can sign a contract to have your legs chopped off in exchange for money, but that would not be a valid legal contract. So while you should inform your insurer about anything to prevent any shenanigans, by all means let some sense prevail. Another thread of thought worth bearing in mind is that for an insurance company the cost of an actual vehicle usually pales in comparison to the injury/human cost.
