Her own transport to get to and fro work at a local hotel working weekends and unsocial late/ night time - early hours AND Full Time College too ……

a. TOY  🥵

I think not !

You are talking at cross purposes. Steve was referring to people at an age where you have done some hard miles to earn the right to a toy if such is your wish. Hopefully your granddaughter may get to such a point in life herself. I do however understand your reaction that a first car premium might be £4k for godsake...absolute nonsense really.

Practicality and reliability are all well and good ,but do they feed your innerman? You could just let that innerman whispering to you have their moment in the sun and who knows may be you are happier and the world as you know it doesn't stop turning.

A bit heavy for me Boomer!

…… and the reliability issues with the Ls400 are ???
Malc

To be fair Malc there has been no issues apart from consumables. The only "repair" I have had done was the parking brake mechanism. I was really talking about long term reliability - but as you have stated before, it will probably see me out!

Also reading far fewer teens are wanting to drive !

Granddaughter age 18 just passed her Test and insurance cost first year about £4k, in her name, with her dad named driver ( clean licence etc ) to reduce the premium as much as possible ….. car basic 2003 Ford Fiesta …… nil value really

Lucky girl her grandad is rich 🤑 😂🥵

Malc

Woah! thats 333 a month for an 18 year old on insurance alone! No wonder todays youth makes different choices.

Can you keep the Jag for fun days? Tax/insure it for say 6 months/year? I had an "occupier" in my garage for many years and only taxed/insured it when I felt the urge.

Thanks Brian, that's close to my thoughts ie tax the Jag but use the Lexus insurance cover 🤔to drive it on the odd occasion

You can't sell the Jaguar because then your forum username would make no sense 😉

The £695 tax is punitive though and I suspect will be the death of many of these older large engine cars, yes I get the environmental argument but that is negated because most of these cars will be covering low mileages only.

Jags have often been beautiful and prestigious luxury comfy powerful cars …… but often rust buckets and moneypits ……. Buy one and you just KNOW the probable financial consequences ……. Buy a sensible Lexus and the word moneypit should be consigned to history

I’m thinking you’ll be making the right decisions

Malc

There is a saying about knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing 🤔. When you look at say St. Paul's Cathedral either it's a stunningly beautiful architectural masterpiece that brings joy to your emotions or its a cold draughty edifice that must cost a fortune to heat. As you say it's your decision 😎

It’s been in her family for about 10 years and now of zilch value to anyone ….. dings and dents whatever . A simple base model 20 years old and only ever used recent years as that “ emergency car runabout ” when the other 2or 3 just aren’t available, being serviced etc

A car thief’s worst nightmare I’d have thought ….. no “ go faster “ credence either ….. not even kids would want to steal it 😂

Zero intrinsic value …. Just huge convenience value

But it serves my granddaughter well getting to and fro work at challenging hours …… and College of course
