Understanding EV

Recommended Posts

Can someone please explain the EV cut out points for a 350h?

If I apply the EV button sometimes it knocks off at 20mph, other times it’s around 26mph and best of all is 36 mph.

I can’t work out why or how the cut off point varies without any rational, or change of driving conditions.

Depends on a multitude of factors.

Let the car do it's thing. No real benefit to using EV mode apart from if you want to travel in stealth

as above. It should only be used to avoid fumes in your garage or being quiet as you arrive/leave your house in the early hours. Forcing EV mode normally results in worse fuel consumption compared to just letting the vehicle do its thing.

The cancelling of the mode depends on throttle, temperature, Battery state of charge and speed.

Just to add a few variables:

Throttle position, road gradient/rolling resistance, wind direction, temperature/weather conditions fuel tank full or not, passengers in car, etc, etc…

As @rayaans said, just let the car do its thing, but if you really want to ‘overthink’ it

Thanks for the answers. It was just curiosity.

These specifics aren't for your NX, so some of the values might be slightly different, but it gives you an idea of why it sometimes isn't available or cuts out at different times:

The only time I ever use the EV button in the 7 years I have had my current car is when I want to take the car out of the garage to wash it and I do not want to invoke the warm up process.

As others have said, just let the car decide what is best.  It will usually run with the engine off at low speeds most of the time on its own, subject to the variables listed above.

Counting down the days now until I pick up my NX.  Wonder how long it will take for me to get used to not getting 70-80 MPG 🤣

I honestly wouldn't bother with the EV button as others have suggested.

Something I've said in the past is that it just seems to be a button which either 'pleeps' to tell you it hasn't worked or if it does, the moment your right foot does anything order than rest on the throttle, 'pleeps' at you to tell you it's deactivated!

In mine, it'll work from standing up to 20/21mph - providing you're light on the throttle. After that, it'll automatically deactivate.

The only time I've found it kind-of works is in the final mile or so running into work - which is just over the border into North Wales and of course, unfortunately part of the new 20mph zones. I can get it running completely in EV mode in that particular circumstance but that is literally it.

From my experience, as quite a gentle driver anyway, I can actually get better (and more sustained) use out of the Battery in hybrid mode at higher speeds.
