Just out of warranty so servicing myself any tips?

Recommended Posts

Had my 10year old Rx450h now for a year, so lexus warranty now finished.

Absolutely faultless for 7000 miles except for a type pressure sensor failing so very pleased with it now I’ve got used to it.

On 64000 miles now so servicing myself , have changed oil / filter ,front and rear transmission fluids etc. which were suprisingly easy.

Really just leaving a spark plug change which does not look too easy.

I would be grateful for any tips from people who’ve successfully done it.

Thanks

Extended Warranty Plus is still available to you. And the £59 hybrid check covers your Battery for one year.

Thanks , True but the price for the next service of approx £700 has made me think twice!

On my list of garages suggested by LOC members is

Grove Garage, Brighton

Might be worth getting a quote as the RX plugs change is quite a labour intensive job.

I am sure Grove Garage labour rate will be less than Lexus.

As always depends on ones attitude towards risk. I pay £54 pm for an extended warranty plus cover which I believe to be an affordable "insurance like" cover. March 2025 will tell me how good my bet was. The major service is a big pill to swallow but iridium plugs won't need another change for years so £1300 ish will give you cover for say two years unless something untowards happens in year two. Irrespective the HHC is a must have.

What is the service interval for plugs and front & rear transmission fluid?

I'm quite relaxed about leaving the plugs longer if it is running well and fuel consumption is fine.  What's the worst that can happen?

The special plugs fitted will comfortably do in excess of 80k miles, some people have gone 100K but in your shoes I would go with 80k.  It is easy to remove and check a plug from the front bank. It's accessing the rear bank that calls for removing a lot of components and refitting afterwards.  Unfortunately, my Lexus Dealer wouldn't to the service  without plugs because although it had done only circa 40 K at the time, they were going by years.

I just feel that if I change plugs now at 64000 I won’t have to worry about them for a long time (and at 79 this year I might not be capable of doing them next time😩!

Plugs are supposed to be changed at 60000 miles
I have heard that old worn plugs can put extra strain on the coils causing failure. Certainly happens on old Jaguars!

Transmission fluid on lots of cars is ‘sealed for life’ which to the manufacturers means 5 years.

I have always changed auto transmission and differential fluids every 40/50000 miles and

never had a problem 🤞🤞
