just wonderd if any other mk1 gs owners have had this problem ,the spare wheel space has an inch of water sloshing around,i have removed the water and taken out one of the drain plugs ,on inspection of the rubber boot seal that seems fine and the rear lights seem seated well so am at a loss as to were it could be comming in ,any advice appreciated

SUGGESTION.........

sit in the boot with torch, close boot, and get friend/wife, or stranger to pour water over the car, using said light emmiting device to search for possible ingress of H20

Or put lots of talcum powder/flour in there,use a hose..on spray and trace where its coming in.

Yep, had this problem until only recently. It is the seal and you'll find its the seal right in front of the boot lock, but on the inside of the seal, if you remove the seal and have a look at the underside, you may find water marks but the outside looks OK. I put silicone sealer on and put the seal back and then closed the boot, checked the next day and tested by putting paper next to the lock and checked over a peroid of a few days and the leak is gone, but the spare wheel looks :yack: now due to water damage.

Unfornantly using a hose will show no leaks as I found out, whats happening is that the water is coming up from the gap between the boot and the bumper, when you'r driving, the water is being sucked in through here - daft but true in my case.

tried the sitting in the boot trick but had no joy so presumed it must be hidden by trim,pete the boot under spare wheel looks fine all beit a little damp.think norkeps suggestion sounds the more likely as i have slight water marks in this area when i took of the trim so the silicone will come out tomorrow and fingers crossed will do the job, as the thought of all that water so close to the stereo equipment amp etc was doing me in

I had same problem and as paul says it was the boot seal, i put a new one on as the old one had lots of cuts in it.

But if its not that then check the clips that hold the bottom trim on the rear screen in place. had new screen in mine and they didnt reseal the clips and i got water in that way. It ran down the chanel at the top of boot and then down the sides to where the amp and changer are.

new boot seal was about £50.

I also had/have this problem. Removed a couple of ther rubber bungs and now drains nicely/gone away. Hose trick will not work. TLC of seals can help. In my case, water never near electrics as below it all.

;) Had this one before i got my series 2 sports, yes it was the seal and if you use the silicone sealer and don't want a mess, cover the area with clingfilm while it is still wet and gently close the boot. You will find the silcone takes up the exact shape of the gap and you can remove the clingfilm when its dry.

Mine had water in the boot on the sides but that was because I had the car valeted! Best thing to do is get inside the boot with a lead light / torch and get a mate to shut the boot and pour water from every direction with a hose, this worked when i had a similar problem in an Imprezza.

should have updated this but forgot ,the leak was comming in through the boot seal in the middle .replaced it and all was well
