Diagnostic Socket

Recommended Posts

:duh: was bored last night and me and my mate were trying to decide if the diagnostic socket under the bonnet, near ecu is the one they use to find faults.

I was reading that they have to be approx 3ft from drivers seat so that means it is inside the car somewhere, anyone tell me where inside the car it is, if it is..

also the tool required to read, is it a 'data logger' or a OBD 2 scanner..

Just need to know what is required to read the faults on car if and when I have any as mate has got most of the gear to do this type of stuff,.

cheers

Well I believe it's under the steering wheel (at least on the IS300 it looks that way). Under the panel that your knees are if you look upwards you'll see a white plug with a black cap on it. As far as I know that's the diagnostic plugin point, only found mine as I I felt the cap brush against me as they'd left it off.

and only OBD-II device capable of the IS0 9141/14230 protocol.

OBD-II is a protocol, as also is the 9141 and 14230. There are others and each manufacture chooses one. Popular ones are;

OBDII - commonly used in US vehicles

VPW - General Motors

PWM - Ford

ISO9141 - Chrysler, Asian, and European

ISO 14230 (also called Keyword 2000)

Each have there own merrits etc.
