Ls400 Auto Tranny Problem

Hello, perhaps somebody can help or knows something.

A member of Euro-LOC has a problem with his 1999 LS400 (100.000miles).

His auto transmission isn't able to shift up from 4th to 5th gear anymore. Car is out of warranty and the dealer quoted him 7000 Euro: LINK

He can feel that the transmission wants to shift into 5th. But it does not.

Urgent advise needed. Is this a know problem?

what is the dealer planning to do with the gearbox, for that amount of money sounds like just a swap out. ? why are they suggesting to do that, they should have the equipment to diagnose what the fault is.

first check the gear oil level (guesss you have)

might be worth having the gear oil changed (with toyota oil) first & the filter cleaned. is the current oil clear ? if it has gone brown something is breaking down in the box.

if changing oil does not clear it would suggest you go to a gearbox specialist that can check the valve operation inside the box, could be just a sticking valve.

swap out of box is not cheap & would almost be better to get new car at that money.
