Go Search !

furthering on the discussions on the "go search yourself" debate

instead of just welcoming a new member with, "go search for yourself as we are all to fed up with answering the same question"

why not politely do a search for the member and post a link up to the topic asked

then refer the poster to the search facility and explain what it can do

a far nicer and welcoming start for a new member, at the end of the day, the more members who stay around and join, the better it is for all of us and the clubs future

if a new member is met with aminosity, he will either dissapear or he will treat the club with the animosity it treated him/her with

when i joined this forum there was many people who were willing to bend over backwards to help me, its what made me stay and join up, and is whats kept me here till now

the one thing that keeps this club going so well, is the friendliness and help that is available

lets all get more out of it , by putting a bit more in !!!

:)

fully agree!!!

The helpfulness of all you guys is what made me stay and now i have been here for 2 years now.

Plus how can you search for something if your new and dont know the specifics of what you are after!

i will try my best to help the new members a little better!

I agree, but common sense should prevail - after doing a search, the member posts what they are after and quotes that they made an unsuccesful seach: Fair enough.

But there are several member out there who quite obviously haven't bothered to make a search, judging by their quite common topics.

Agreed

But i think it needs to be updated,as you cant search for anything with 3 letters.

software constraint Pete

warning - techy stuff ahead :D

we use MySQL full text searches.

this lets users search the full topic text and titles, quickly.

However, as these indexes are held in the database, a limit has to be set on the size of a word that will be indexed.

This limit was set by the database developers at 3 characters.

so - we cant update the search mate, its not a limitation imosed by ourselves, or the forum.

When I bought my first Lexus this and the USA site was a huge help in understanding certain issues with my GS. Since then I have moved on and had two other makes of car, but I still rate this as the best of the sites around. The helpfulness of the members and the sheer fact that they are willing to share experiences and be honest with each other makes it that way. That's why I still check in and see what's going on. Both the Audi and Merc sites I have tried aren't a patch on this, so I say don't change...... the strength is in the members attitude!

Off mysoap box now!
