Creaking Noise From Rear

Hi all

I've got a creaking noise coming from the driver's side rear which sounds like the coil spring. The sound is awful from inside the car, I have to turn the radio up to drown the sound!! It gets worse as the journey goes on and is more audible when going very slowly and pumping the brakes hard. Lexus have had a look and said it's just a dry joint which they've lubricated. It was fine for about 5 miles and then it starts again with a vengeance. Any clues what it could be anyone???

I've got the same thing on my car since some fool drove into the back of me a few weeks ago, doesn't do it all the time, but they're gonna check it out when it goes in for repair soon

It's an IS200 sport 51 reg with 57,000 mls, noise started at 55,000, don't know whether it's got anything to do with it but the noise got worse since the rear calipers which were serviced after they seized up. Brakes feel strange too.

Have got the same noise on my 2000 Lexus (60000mls). I think it's the joints or rubber bushes creaking, sounds bloody awful. Probably the only way to cure the noise is to replace the offending item, but that could work out expensive if you can't pinpoint the exact problem. I also get a slight creaking from the front suspension when turning and braking at slow (under 10 mph) speeds. Greasing everything would probably work for the short term, but past experience leads me to say the noise will probably come back

Thanks for that Paul. Think I've found where the noise is coming from (Joint under the spring, there's two bolts on the arm, it's the larger one). I've greased it but no joy. Going to take it to the mechanic to see if he can replace the necessary parts. Will let you know.

Had exactly the same problem on mine! This may sound a little strange, but i got my tracking and geometry done the other day and the problem has now gone!

Hi There,

Did you ever really get to the bottom of the rear creaking noise on your IS ?? I have an RS200 with exactly the same issue. I have greased and oiled everything in sight on the rear of the car but no joy.

If I don't stop it soon I will need to fit a more powerfull stereo and crank the volume up !!

Any help greatfully appreciated.

Yes, it turned out to be the lower ball joint. Apparently an expensive part because you can't just buy the ball joint itself (you have to buy the whole arm link with it). If yours turns out to be this which, I'm told by my mechanic, it normally is, it's the joint closest to the inside of the wheel (almost in the wheel cavity). A quick fix is to give it a good squirt of "Wurst" grease, it takes about 3 weeks to work in but surprisingly does the trick!! but you will need to do it again after about 8 months. The noise is the ball creaking within the nylon case due to becoming dry and is apparently quite common. GOOD LUCK

Ugh...I'm having the same problem (2002 IS300, 46000 miles). I only hear it at low speeds when I'm just getting going or I'm coming to a stop. I have 8 months left on my lease...hopefully a few squirts of grease will help me make it that far.
