Sat Nav Systems

Recommended Posts

I have a garmin sat nav (streetPilot I3) But its annoying getting the thing out and sticking it on the window, then leaving a mark!

So is it possible to get the lexus sat nav installed?

How much would it cost, is it any good and would it be worth it? or should i just stick to my wee one?

Cheers

RR

I think yes it is technically possible but it's not feasible, you're talking upwards of a couple of grand from what I remember! IE new wiring loom, all the bits etc.

You'd be better off just taking the head unit out and replacing with one of the say Alpine systems or Pioneer satnav systems, don't honestly have any idea what hte nav is like on the newer ones, I've got an old Alpine one but it does the job so that's enough for me!

Lexus one aint that good at all.

That's a bit harsh, the satnav in my 02 IS is still better than the ones in our newer BMW and Mercedes.......

I know the portable ones are feature packed, but really can't cut it in built up areas so they're out in my view - haven't tried the proper aftermarket ones (Pioneer, Alpine, etc.) but would agree with Aido that they're probably the best option if you're looking for something a little more permanent. If I didn't already have satnav, I'd have definitely had one of those new Pioneer double din all in one satnav units by now

the portable ones . . . . really can't cut it in built up areas

I would like to understand the basis on which you say this. I have used a Tom Tom 910 in London, Manchester and Birmingham and it never missed a trick. It's maps are more up-to-date; its algorithms select routes more effectively; it holds speed camera data bases that are updated monthly and which include visual and audible warnings. It accepts a full post code as a destination. Even the display, though it is considerably smaller than the Lexus display, makes better use of the information available. It presents a wide range of selectable data in an easily readable form and gives a choice of 2D or 3D graphics. I find its remote control easier to use than a touch screen, though it offers a touch screen for those that want it.

Dealing with the need to move a portable satnav in and out of the car is a right royal pain, and the Lexus Bluetooth hands-free is much better than the one on the Tom Tom, but on the basis of navigation performance on the road, the Lexus DVD system is just not in the same league.

Yeah you are right. :winky:

What i should have said they cant compare to aftermarket ones.

They probably are really good compared to the stock ones by other manafacturer's.

RR, I think in the main aftermarket ones are better for POI (speed cameras etc) I understand your point that unfortunately we live in a society where such things can't be left in situ.

I have a Lexus system and I have just had the pop-up (screen) part replaced under warranty, the cost of which was £2895.00 :o :o :o yes that 2 at the begining is supposed to be there mind you £95 of that was for labour :D !!!

Another good reason for not getting one.

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer to have a boot full of AZ maps of the UK, by county. Can take up a lot of room to unfold the maps, but you get a real sense of joy when one finally reaches one's destination.

The image of someone bowling around the North Circular in rush hour traffic, peering at a map held on the steering wheel and trying to find the right turnoff for a particular small company in Wilsden, doesn't quite fit these days . . . . . . . . :duh:
