Hi folks!

quick question for people with wii's! we finally set up the living room with new hd tv, in the menu/screen it has the option of 50hz, 60hz or EDTV/HDTV 480p. the latter is not highlighted therefore i cannot select it!

the wii is connected via component > scart. i tried component only but still doesnt become selectable. i cant find anything on this on the net :(

does anyone know what im doing wrong?

thanks!

everything on the internet says component cables are the only thing you can use. they dont even make hdmi cables for the wii.

also other people use edtv / hdtv with components

now the question is, do i spend £20 on nintendo's cable, or £10 on gamewares cable.....

£10 wins!! i remember the gadget show reviewed expensive cables vs cheap ones... there was no difference at all

sounds like you have a composite cable. That is the worst signal you can use, next best is an RGB cable which can also go into your SCART connector (if it supports RGB).

Component as you say has 5 RCA cables, pretty sure that cannot be connected to SCART.

That was for digital cables as the signal remains the same (HDMI/DVI) however component is analogue and therefore quality cables do make a difference, however I understand the gamesware cable is good.

After reading the top of the thread, I was just thinking to myself how you even had component cables as my Wii doesn't, just the composite ones...........why do you need a new cable though, what happened to the one in the box?

Yeah one of things that annoys me about the wii is how primitive its display characteristics are, on a 50" screen the picture really is quite poor.

Wii only ships with composite cable (One vid cable (yellow) and stereo audio cables (red + white)) - therefore no HD and rubbish picture on HD tellies.

Composite cable (sold separately - 3 vid cables + 2 audio) will allow Wii to display at 480p - not exaclty HD but passable on HD tellies.

No real HD on Wii until Wii HD (the refresh console).

Oh so there is a component cable available? I'll have to look at getting one of those as composite is rubbish and so out of date it's unbelievable.......

yep - makes a big difference. The official ninty one is rarer than rocking horse poo - but there are lots of 3rd party ones about usually go for about a tenner.

I got the joytech one from play.com. (just looked there and they do have the official ninty one but it's £7 dearer than the joytech one - but remember that component is analogue so cable quality does matter)

I was so ticked when i got my xbox 360, litteraly two days later they announced the hdmi version :tsktsk:

but i thought a standard RCA 3 plug connector could do 480 :| i guess i was wrong

not 480p

PAL via composite is (i think) 720x576 interlaced (576i) (NTSC is 480i)

either way: wii via component looks much better than composite.
