Noisy Tyres To Be Banned

Background

Under the directive 92/23/EEC tyres can only be supplied into the market if they conform to certain requirements. Under a further directive- 2001/43/EEC- the requirements were extended to cover the noise tyres were permitted to make in contact with the road surface.

Compliance schedule

2009: all except C1d and C1e (not sure what they are?)

2010: all tyres over 185mm and up to 215mm width

2011: all tyres over 215mm width

All tyres without the prefix "s" denoting sound are not permitted for sale after the above dates.

ok this is just getting beyond a joke now! how can they even contemplate this as viable when our roads are full of holes and unsmoothe, laying decent roads will stop half the noise, i can imagine them pesky pigs sitting at the side of the road with a db meter aiming at everyones tyres, but then again how are they gioing to hear the tyres above our engines exhausts and radios! when i was in egypt and abroard everyone beeps their horns every 2 seconds i think we as drivers should start making as much noise as we can, while we can, IN PROTEST! beep your horn til everyone else does like in boring traffic jams, HORNS ARE THERE TO MAKE US BE HEARD the SAME AS NOISY TYRES.

i am going to call this mission "lets get horny and keep our rubbers on." just need your help in kick starting it (no viagra jokes im serious on this one)

Rebel against the prius generation! without noisey tyres a prius will never been heard and so many kids will die!!!

Did you know in New York cars like the Prius may be forced to make engine noise's for the benefit of the blind?..... Personally i can see reason with that but!!..... modern cars can "whisper" around town so where's the line drawn?

What would happen if you did a wheelspin tyre noise gets loud then

i think the line should be drawn straight through the idea and scrapped completely its insane to have completely silent cars! fork lift truckers are told to constantly use their horns in populated warehouses because no one can hear them, so why not car drivers in populated streets?

whats their next plan to turn off our head lights so people cant see us as well?? and with the deaf not being able to hear us, thats a lot of money the gov are gunna get from death taxes cos you cant even die for free these days!

This is one mahoosive population control scheme by the government!

LOL what makes you say that then, im just lost for words now on what these people think they can get away with in maniplutaing our lives, population control tactics have been on the rise for the last 10+ years and more i was just unaware of it before then, they are either killing us off with unheard and unseen cars, terrost attacks, economical failure so pepole cant buy food and heating. let alone silent tyres!! we really should of listened to women when they said going into labour HURTS!!!

But hey i suppose life goes on until its controlled. they just want the control they cant have!

Bikers will unfondly remember a Eurocrat (spelt with a 'p' not a 'c') from the early 1990's called Martin Bangemann

who knew nothing about Motorcycles, yet wanted compulsory leg protectors fitted to every Bike.

It was proven leg protectors on Motorcycles transferred impact energy in such a way as to catapult the

head & torso forward in the event of a crash, meaning head & upper body/chest/neck injuries were

more likely to result. The so-called leg protectors’actually increased injuries & made them muchmore severe..

This evidence was placed in front of this Eurocrat 100,000+ Bikers, yet he still pressed on to pass the legislation

as he was too pig headed to see the facts. Nice move you daft twot (spelling?).

I beg whoever our next Government may be.....please take us out of the EU

i heard that this one has been over ruled and no longer is legislation? why are people so timewrapped and concerned with such little things like noise of tyres and engines and lights and carrots and bannanas, when we have problems of the likes of next years F1 cars beings so 90's looking and boring.. have you seen them lol

Is this why F1 are running on slicks next year so they dont make as much surface contact noise and therefore you can hear the engine better, or massa as he screams his lungs out as he skids off a wet track with no aerodynamics :whistling:

According a recently published report by Berry Environmental Ltd, up to 134 people in the Greater London area are at risk of dying due to exposure to road transport noise. It also estimated that some 500 cases of ischaemic heart disease,

or over 100 heart attacks, of which half could be fatal, could be attributed to exposure to transport noise.

If I am ever unlucky enough to have a Heart Attack, it will becuase I am an overweight fat so & so,

not because my HKS Super Drager or my Dunlop SP9090's got the better of me !!

I don't get it - so they're saying just the noise tyres make cause people to die - is it something specific to that frequency as surely even when all is taken into account things like diesel engines, horns, exhausts etc all cause more noise?

I've just read that link and it kinda sounds like it's trying to say that people are dying due to lack of sleep from living too close to motorways, city centres, busy roads etc, surely engine and exhaust noise play a much larger part of this than tyre noise?!

Sounds like another fool generating useless reports to milk what they can from the taxpayer which are then passed onto the idiotic MEPs who then do the same?!

Not sure they do actually fella - at speed, tyres are far noisier than engines on modern cars. Apart from the ultra-loud diesels that seem to get fitted to Transit-style vans - WTF is that all about?

Having lived close to a fairly busy road, you do kind of get used to it but it is stressful having that deafening noise going constantly, especially in summer where it's too hot to close the windows. I agree that there are probably more important issues to worry about, but I don't disagree that on principle, tyres should be made quieter. Science will come up with new compounds that provide more grip but less noise - there is nothing like compulsion to focus the minds of researchers!

Fair point mate, think I've got used to having a noisy car and I'm applying that across the spectrum :D

Just thinking out loud here - is it the harder compounds that are generally louder? And the harder compounds that usually last longer? Just wondering if one quick win there, ie swap to softer compound tyres - would result in profits for the tyres companies going up as people would be buying them more often?

Will be interesting to see how this one works out I reckon!

As I've posted on here before, in the UK, road surfaces are made deliberately rough so there IS tyre noise. The idea(???) is that drivers can realise how fast they are driving by the NOISE!!

There are alternative surfaces that can be used that are QUIET! Some of the M5 goes quiet at some points.

Here in Bristol they used one - with great notices about how good it was (Quiet/as cheap/rain run-off, etc) but then.......nothing.

I believe Germany uses silent surfaces. And surely, a rough surface equals higher tyre wear? So is costing British drivers ££££s?

It's a crap country that doesn't run for the benefit of all - just "how little can I do and how stupid an excuse can the 'Spokesman' give"?

If our priority was "how can I improve things?" in all areas we'd have a GDP of human happiness like Bhutan?

I don't know about the compound hardness, but certainly the tread pattern makes a big difference. 4WD vehicles with off-road rubber fitted seem to make a sort of howling noise, must be something to do with having big chunky individual blocks smacking down on the surface rather than having a smoother rolling surface.

Chris is right though, the road surface makes the biggest difference. When you drive along the M25 and reach the point between the M3 and the M4, where it was widened two or three years ago, the surface suddenly goes so quiet it's like you're flying. ROAR-hussssh - just like that!

The quiet stuff is called SMA isn't it? Stone-Mastic-Asphalt; only trouble is it's not that grippy when it's first laid, unlike the regular blacktop.

Chris i don't think anyone's denying the fact the road surface is designed to make tyre noise, the object of the post was how ridiculous it is that tyres will have a legal harmonic limit before sale.

But the logical extension of your argument that more noise is better is that cars should be purpose designed to make as much noise as possible - clearly not such a good idea. The sort of roads where traffic speed is high enough to make life unpleasant for those who live nearby are not the sort of roads where people are likely to just wander out into the street anyway, so the argument that people will dance gaily out straight into the road just because the cars make a bit less noise seems to me somewhat flawed.

I really can't see why people are so anti this piece of legislation - it's almost as though the mere fact that it came out of Europe is enough to turn people against it. Even if the UK left the EU tomorrow, no tyre manufacturer is going to spend millions developing new quiet tyres for Europe and then not sell them in the UK.

How many posts do we see in the Wheels and Tyres forum asking 'which tyres are the quietest'? A darn site more than we see from people asking about 'which tyres are the loudest because those pedestrians just keep on walking out in front of me', that's for sure.

Still, 1-2 away from home, in Berlin! :D
