Rx300 Transmission Problem?

Recommended Posts

I am looking into buying a RX300.

However, I been reading report of the transmission breaking around 80-100k miles.

Mostly from America, and it seems to happen in both FWD and AWD model.

Is this also a problem for the UK RX300? I am interested in a 99-2000 RX300 with around 90-100K miles on the clock.

It does appear to be an problem mainly in the US, not sure why as I would have thought the driving conditions in Europe are at least as hard on trans.

I have enquired with a couple of main dealers and as you would expect they say there are no inherent problems they know of, certainly there is nothing I can find on TSB info, also two Toyota/Lexus specialists I have asked (who I trust more than a main dealer for this kind of info) have also indicated no problems they have come across.

Only time will tell :crybaby: :winky:

If you are by any chance thinking of part exing the Altezza RS2000 then I have an Rx300 88K miles and have been looking for an Altezza. We could do business?

I know of one member who had a transmission failure in Europe. It is possibly to do with heat, the European RX has a better transmission cooler which may explain things.

All of the RXs I have seen (series I) have had poor fluid quality, not a nice bright red colour but a deep red/brown colour. I would recommend a drain/refill (not a full flush) every 20k miles. I've also installed a filter on mine.

Mainly in the US and mainly with the 2.4 ltr. 2 wheel drive. Not heard of many problems with the 3 ltr 4wd UK and Jap versions.

US didn't have the RX240, only RX300. The issue I believe is mainly on the 4WD and not the 2WD.

Yep...thats what I thought too!
