On Sunday morning at 11.30am, going home from church on a country road in the supreme comfort of my LS400, I was involved in a minor accident. I watched a white van (Renault - and yes I am a white van man too!) coming towards me using up a little too much of the road. I dropped my speed to about 10mph and hugged the nearside hedgerow.

Lucky I did as the approaching van caught my wing mirror and then to my horror I felt the rear end twitch. Checking my rear view mirror, I reversed as hard as I could as the driver carried on down the road. Fortunately there was a road junction several hundred yards back and I managed a 'Startsky and Hutch' turn, with lots of smoke and I can assure you with complete safety. Again luckily the visibility was excellent and noone was at risk.

As you all know, an LS400 has a good turn of speed and no match for a Renault van! I caught up with the offending van just outside the pub, where I think he was dropping someone off. I drew up alongside to stop him from driving off. Embarrassingly this was also now outside church and there were a lot of people I knew walking and driving past.

The driver said he was sorry and wasn't trying to escape being caught! I noticed his hands were shaking and after I showed him the damage to my car, he climbed back into his cab and wrote down his details. This took for ever and when I read what he had written, not only was the registration number wrong, but I later had to google his phone number as that was wrong too!

A choir member stopped and said that the same van had just clipped his wing mirror, but without any damage.

Today I have been to a repairer and am assured that the damage is superficial and just requires some preparation and painting. The repairer has asked me to supply the paint to keep the cost down and to use 4 cans, 2 for each colour - as aerosols.

I phoned a really helpful Lexus agency in Bristol and their parts department have come up with the 2 paint codes that I require. However Lexus will only offer a tiny amount of paint as a touch-up and not as an aerosol.

I have 2 questions for you amazingly informative people:

1) where can I obtain these aerosol cans?

2) the lower panels are plastic (I since find out), so do these require a specialist or different paint?

Many thanks for reading my jottings and hope they are of interest and maybe have made you smile. I would really like to thank all those who have helped make my LS ownership to be such a happy one. Soon it will be a blemish free one too!

Kindest regards to you all.

David

take the paint codes to halfords and they will make them up for you in aerosol cans

plastics normally need a primer suitable for plastics, halfords do this as well

Brilliant! Lexus owners are the best - as are their motors!

Very many thanks for the info

Kindest regards

David

Hi,

Hope you have more luck than I did at Halfords the other week. Took the paint code in with me wanting the both upper and lower colours and I was told they dont list my colour.....it`s silver!

After a bit of searching on the web, found a supplier that even told me the cars sill/bumper paint code and supplied me the both colours.

My problem was the lower paint code/colour on my Mk1....the car`s data plate stated 176 (silvermist metalic) but has no reference on the lower colour. I even tried to look-up the 176 code as a toyota colour but was told it`s not listed. If you have a two tone LS check if you have two sets of codes on your data plate. If you look at the original catalogue it only states the main colour, not the lower. I later found out that the lower paint was light grey metalic- code A30.

Try this site here.

That isn't the site that I'm thinking of though, I'm sure I found a better one. But don't know if that might help at all ?

Argh, this is annoying me now, I'm sure I found a site before which had the two-tone LS400s on it !

Thanks a lot for your help - am still on the case!
