Have you checked all the fuses? do you have a multimeter, you can check the fuses with this and check the voltage across the Battery. Sounds like you need an auto electrician to take a look at it. The big wire carries the charging current from the alternator to the Battery, a thinner wire will be the "sense" wire which has the Battery voltage on it

Sounds like somethign si broken somewherew, posibly at a oin or inside it's insulation, probably as it goes round a bend, wires get stiff and brittle with age. Is it a NEW alternator or a new to you alternator, either way get it checked it might be at fault and if it is new you can get a new one free. Have you got an alram/immobliser? is it workign correctly as that maybe the cause of the iognition stuff not working correctly.

just an update so u all know what the fault was after double checking fuses and alternator wiring there was still no joy so i decided i would hot wire the car to see if i could get the ignition, and as i went to check the wiring in the block that comes out of the ignition barrel, when i went to disconnect it

it seemed to come apart real easy and thought to myself that it was not connected probly so checked for power and there was power there so i reconnected plug makeing sure it was in all the way and it was and everything worked fine so this was all caused via a bad alternator power steering leak and a plug not connected proply.
