Gutted :(

Recommended Posts

hhhmmmm i had an expensive drive at the weekend, decided to have a nice drive over the hills with the missus ;).

Next thing i get around the corner and there it was....the biggest pot hole ive ever seen. There was a car coming towards me so the only thing i could do was hit it and i was doing 10mph UNDER the speed limit :(.

A Clunking noise started stright away, got home and i had bent my alloy wheel and there seems to be oil (might be brake) all over my drive. luckily my tyre's ok!

Really annoyed as a new wheel (18in 6 spoke) is £203 + vat from Lexus and then i need to find where the oil is coming from.

Going to claim from the council as when i went up taking pictures the hole measured 8 inch deep.

Just wondering is it worth paying and hoping i get my money back, or claim off my insurance £250 excess (protected no claim :)) and then claim that back from the council??

Any thoughts!

Thanks Phill

sorry to hear this mate. a couple of my friends were in the same situation before. im pretty sure their first reply would be 'no, we cant help you', but you got to keep hassling them, eventually they would give in - result.

good luck!

Hi sorry to hear about your problem ,look at the potholes .co.uk site ,plenty of advice on how to report ;claim etc .you can win but it takes a long time. Also get the tyre checked out properly before refitting ,this happened to me last year tyre looked OK but some plies inside were damaged so it was replaced for safety Good Luck

Im pretty sure if it bent your wheel your tyre will be damaged... so would deffo take it to a garage to get it checked!

Cant you just buy a 2nd hand one from eBay? Surely if you get a brand spanker the paint will be a lot brighter than a soiled wheel which is a few years old...?

the oil leaking on the alloy could be from the CV joint or CV booth which ever the correct name is.

when i went to change my tyre, the inside of my alloy had oil all over it and this was due to a rubber seal on the drive shaft had slit.... worth taking it to a garage and getting it checked out mate. and as for the wheel there is one here on eBay

This one one eBay has a flat spot on the inside rim and the edges of the outer rim looks odd as if there is a protector on it of some sort.

best of luck with your claim mate.

I tried to claim a few years back when I hammered a pot hole in my celica. (unavoidable, doing 30 mph, round a bend and a bus coming the other way so went straight over the hole)

Hole was about 2 foot across and about 8 inches deep. The hole was just round the corner from my house and my old man had reported it only a week earlier.

I tried claiming and got nowhere. Apparently the road was 'inspected' only six months earlier (on two yearly inspections = yeah right!) and showed no signs of disrepair (the council obviously don't realise that thiese holes can appear in a matter of days).

At the time i worked for Tarmac as a highways inspector. I wrote my letter in the way i would report surfaces for my job and i think this was the problem. There was loads of technical jargon in there and the photographs showed all the specialist equipment used for measuring/recording defects.

The wheel was badly damaged and i wrecked the tyre. Tried to get the wheel repaired but everyone said it was knackered. Tried to get one new one but the wheel was discontinued!!

I had written statements from numerous places stating that the wheel was beyond repair and that the wheel was not available any more.

Ended up having to buy 4 new rims and two tyres.

Councils reply was basically 'look where your're going'

Still makes me mad now!

Your joking they actually said that, that would p*ss me right off.

Well i got my claims package through last night from Bolton council and my insurance have been intouch with them aswel.

The annoying thing is at the bottom of the letter is says "please think before trying to claim, there are better places we can spend the money" aaaarrrrr how checky.... i pay road tax and they have the cheek to write that. Im going to take this to the end.

My Mother works for Bolton council and my missus family are all in the Law business so they wont get rid of me easily lol
