Gearbox Problem (I Think) Need Some Info

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have an LS400 (1999). It's got only 70,000 miles on it. Was imported from Japan a few years ago.

I have notice something....When I am on a hill or stopped at a traffic light on a hilly road..the car moves back. I am sure that an automatic car is not supposed to roll back because when it's on 'D' it is always in first gear..

or am i just guessing..or i dont know anything about automatics..

your help is most appreciated.

Hi

No problem, it is normal for an auto to roll backwards on an incline in Drive when idling. This is particularly noticeable with such a low idle speed.

It depends on the force of gravity over coming the force at the driven wheels. My LS will creep forward on the flat, hold on slight slopes and then roll back at varying speeds in line with the incresing angle of the hill.
