Road Tax

OK

I took delivery of a Lexus is200 on saturday before i bought the car i asked if it includes road tax the garage owner said something about new rule that they dont include them you need to buy it yourself ? Then i tried buying tax online & said i couldnt as i dont have valid insurance ok fine i wait as is going to be valid from 1 nov(jst as well i didnt as it said it be valid from 01/10/2010 losing a month & still paying full whack i think not) & something else on taxdisc website while typing info about the car it said 'A new licence is not due for this vehicle until: 01 02 2011' so it seems the tax is still valid from its last owner for a good few months but i havent got a tax on the window hence not comfortable driving it mean time so question is can i drive it legally without one displayed on window? its not as if tax expired & still driving the car as i know the answer to that one. Or would it be case of new owner, new tax ? That seems like wasting unnessecary money imo

Sounds like a dodgy dealer for a garage to me. I expect hes' going to return the disk to the DVLA and claim a refund.

Unless the law has changed in September - I bought mine in August and asked the dealer to tax it. If he is genuine trader/garage he can take the paperwork in to the local post office and get a new 12 month disc. Mine did. That means there is no having to wait until you get the log book(V50) back from the DVLA - which also depends on the "dodgy dealer" sending in the paper work. (assuming he has it to send in)

BTW It is a legal requirement to display a current tax disc for the car while it is on the road.

in a word no, the offence of no tax is generally referred to failing to display a valid tax disc, even if the vehicle has tax, if the site shows that tax isn't due, the person who had it last will be in the process of getting a refund for the unused months, which can take 6 weeks...

Thanks for reply nah isnt a dodgy car dealer i bought from a reputable one that gets alot of his cars from car main dealers, in my case he got my lexus from lexus of reading i know all of his cars he sells dont include them he may be able to buy from me if i requested, but i think im capable of buying it myself unless he can get if for me with no extra charge, no such thing as free lunch! & yes i got the log book & relevant paper work with the car ! & the taxdisc site still says i got no insurance(i have it just started today) so cant proceed to buy yet!! & insurance comp says it could take up to 7 or 10 days for them to update their site!!!!what a surprise more inconvenience from these people!! grr!! :(

yeh it changed for vehicles registered after march 2001, and again at march 2006

before the change in 2001 they did plan on just the one change, and the 2006> prices were gonna apply for 2001> cars, at the time I had a 2000X and my mate had a 2002 02, I was payin £190 for the year and he was looking at paying £440!!!

things changed before it was implimented and the revisions applied instead as detailed on parkers site

If I remember correctly motor dealers are no longer allowed to 'cash in" part expired tax discs unless they first register the vehicle in their name which adds another 'keeper" to the V5C,I would therefore think the previous owner who has the right has returned the disc for a refund which has not yet been processed.

BTW my 1994 LS400 cost me only £190.00 for a year last time! I say only, given the state of the road network we should be paying nothing!
