Loud Banging

Hi all,

As of late I seem to be getting this "banging sound" when coming off/on power suddenly, the harder I press the accelerator the harder/louder the banging sound is.

Sometimes it also happens when going from Neutral into Drive and very rarely when from Neutral to Reverse when standing still.

It's coming from the rear sounds like something is wrong with my prop/diff?

Has anyone else had this problem? The car is a 1996 LS400 by the way.

I intent on checking it out next week as I have a few days off and would just like to have a rough idea on what to look out for!

Just a thought, but is the transmission fluid at the correct level?

Wouldn't have thought it was the transmission,I believe there are rubber couplings on the propshaft which may be worn but check all the rear suspension rubbers and mounts,another possibility is worn engine and/or transmission mounts again these do fail so worth a look.

The transmission fluid is at the correct level yeah no no probs there.

I'll give all the mounts a look next week to see if I find anything suspicious

i had a similar thing on an LDV van of all things about 10 years ago. It was the bearing in the middle of the prop shaft giving up the ghost. worth a look.

Would second Steve2006 in it might be the suspension. I had knocking from the back on my mk3 when accelerating sharply which was caused by a worn n/s upper wishbone.
