Hi all.

Bought my L is220d 3 months ago, had no problems so far until last wed. The day before drove 200miles to get home from my sis's mostly motorway kept it on 5th gear with avr speed 80mph and revs between 2,5 - 3k the journey went fine with no problem however next day got in the car drove obout 5 miles (in town) and the next thing all them lights came up (engine managment, red triangle, VSC light, and CHECK VSC) and obviously car went into a limp mode.

Went to the private garage to get it diagnose, got error code P2002 (we all know what it is)

Was gonna take the car bk to the dealer (private dealer) and give it to him to fix it as when the problem occured the car was still under 3 months warranty he gave me.

In the meantime drove the car over the wkend to work (3miles distance) and bk home and then 2day all of the sudden on my way bk home the car didn't go into a limp mode even though all them lights were on. At the time it seemed strange but whenever i got bk into the car about an hour later surprisingly all the lights were gone and the car was goin ok. So i took it on motorway drove 20miles away and bk home keeping revs up between 3 and 3,5k and so far its all ok.

So there is my question now. Does anybody know what the hell hapen???

I was meant to go to ur man tomorow but i dont see the point now. Instead of that was thinkin about goin to Lexus dealer and let them to have a look an use their computers maybe they will be able to give me a right answer.

My concern also is, what if it happens again in month or 2 months time? the car will not be under warranty and to be honest I wont be able to pay almost 2k to fix it.

I dont really know what to think Im all confused. I was told that the problem is caused by carbon builded up and blocking some kind of filter inside a cat converter. . . Is it posible that it just cleared itself somehow???

Started even thinkin abouy gettin rid of my car but I only bought it 3 monts ago and like a lot so far...

Any idaes????

Any help will be much appreciated. Thank u.

I had the same as you - limp mode, I tried 10kms at 3500rpm, I sprayed with contact cleaner the egr valve plug and since then it is OK (knocking on the wood).

My car is not in warranty anymore so I don't solve it now, but your still is.

You should still have the error in the memory and as P2002 means:

P2002 - Particulate Trap Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

• DPNR catalytic converter (Manifold converter sub-assembly)

• Differential pressure sensor

• Differential pressure sensor vacuum hose is clogged

• Blockage in vacuum transmitting pipe sub-assembly

• Exhaust gas temperature sensor

• Exhaust gas leaks in TOYOTA D-CAT

• Mass air flow meter

• Engine ECU

try to get the dealer to check the DNPR physically. There may be some fault but they must open it, because as you see, this error means many parts.

Is it posible that it just cleared itself somehow???

also possible.

3rd possibility is that a sensor gave wrong information to the ECU

You are right to be concerned, as was I when I got mine from a private garage and the warranty ran out. I followed some advice on here and got 2 yr extended warranty from Lexus. It aint cheap but then neither are the repairs that are likely to happen on your car. So far, I have recouped all the money I shelled out on the warranty in the first 3 months with replacement of the headlight unit due to ballasts failing!

Good news 4 me lads!!

Went to Lexus Belfast yesterday n left a car for a computer diagnose. Got a phone call later that day from service department, ur man say that cat converter and egr valve need to b replaced bla bla bla I was obviously devastated. But he also said that they had contacted Lexus UK and becouse it's a quite common fault in these models they r gonna fix it for me on their expence so Happy Days!!!!

Just got the car bk now. He said the put a brand new and modified parts so it will not happen again. So thats me Happy until the next fault occur, hope not :)

I just wud like to thank to Lexus Belfast for all the help and for gettin the problem sorted.

  • 3 months later...

Hi to all.Just to add my expirience with this problem. I only had my 2006 (55000 miles) is220d for only a month (2nd owner) and I had the same problem. Engine light and check VSC. I was panic at first but then read a lot (and order an OBD II scanner) and decide to do something. I open the fuel tank cap and clean it with pure spirit (Here in Cyprus you can find it in supermarkets) and wipe it off. I let it dry for 15 min (or so) and ... voila ... the lights were back to normal after the next start.

Hi Guys,

I am having this problem as well. Check VSC, Engine and Traction light on. Whenever this happens, I would feel the car misfiring first then the warning and lights. I got the car in the UK, but now I am back in Malaysia with car. Took it to Lexus Malaysia, and they were quite reluctant to check it out since I didn't buy the car from them. Anyway, the errors were P0301 and P0304, which means Cylinder 1 and 4 misfiring. I have changed all the plugs and the coils for these 2 cyclinders but the problem is still there. I have run out of ideas. Don't even dare drive the car as I am afraid the unburnt fuel from the misfiring might screw up the cat converter.

Any experience or ideas on what might have caused the misfiring?

tec
